TIA BLAKE & HER FOLK-GROUP – Folksongs & Ballads LP (Ici Bientot)

A greatly appreciated reissue of this 1971 album by the then Paris based singer Tia Blake & Her Folk-Group. The album is a collection of American & British folk songs performed with fantastic confidence by the 19 year old singer. The guitar accompaniment is perfect for the songs & we knowfans of everything from Bridget St. John, Vashti Bunyan, Nick Drake, Sibylle Baier, Bert Jansch, Sandy Denny, Nico, Francoise Hardy to Gillian Welch will LOVE this. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

HORSEGIRL – Versions of Modern Performance LP/CD (Matador)

Chicago trio HORSEGIRL makes their eagerly-awaited debut with “Versions of Modern Performance”, seeing the teenage group explore angled post-punk and noisier discordance with grace and confidence, wrapping this sound around catchy, hook-laden pop tunes. There’s an obvious SONIC YOUTH influence here, as well as a bit of GBV, a bit of WIRE, and a bit of that 80s/90s sound on Flying Nun. This is a fantastic debut from these local heatseekers. RECOMMENDED, and keep your eyes peeled for this group!

ANGEL OLSEN – BIG TIME LP/CD/TAPE (Jagjaguwar) limited color vinyl or black with newsprint poster while supplies last

Angel Olsen continues to reinvent herself on her 2022 album “Big Time.” There’s always been a country twang lurking in the background of Angel’s music but she seems to have fully embraced it this time around. Her vocal approach is slightly different, maybe a little softer with some nice Linda Ronstadt esque harmonies & reminders of another great former Chicago based singer Neko Case. The music has a nice airy quality with pedal steel & synthesized strings providing a nice bed for the Laurel Canyon style countrified tunes.Reckless alum Emily Elhaj holds down that bass duties with confidence as always. RECOMMENDED.

KELLY LEE OWENS – LP. 8 (Smalltown Supersound) 

The London based artist Kelly Lee Owens traveled to Norway during the pandemic to work on this album with experimental mainstay Lasse Marhaug. The result is a mix of minimalist electronic pop ala Chris & Cosey with drone elements ala Jeffrey Cantu Ledesma, ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER, Jenny Hval etc…

In a world that seems fairly bleak at the moment, Chicago Rock N’ Roll Trio DEHD are trying to keep an eye towards optimism. On Blue Skies, their first set for Fat Possum, there’s a feeling of moving forward. What sadness is in these songs is something not to be forgotten, but to work through, because on the other side might be something pretty cool. These songs are sophisticated & intricate, but they’re also reaaalllly fun.

LADDIO BOLOCKO – ‘97-’99 3LP box set (Castle Face)

LADDIO BOLOCKO was a late 90s noise/post rock band from NYC. There was definitely a buzz about them at the time & they were often mentioned alongside bands like TURING MACHINE, SLINT etc… Their sound was rooted more in repetition & noise though like sonic explorers THIS HEAT & even TRAD GRAS OCH STENAR. This band definitely deserves a revisit. RECOMMENDED.

KAITLYN AURELIA SMITH & EMILE MOSSERI – I Could Be Your Dog/I Could Be Your Moon LP (Ghostly) limited color or black

Brilliant collaboration between the contemporary new age synth experimentalist Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith & Emile Mosseri best known for his score to the film “Minari.” Uplifting synth vignettes that veer into an almost BEACH HOUSE direction at times.

THE CLASH – Combat Rock: The People’s Hall 3LP/2CD/TAPE remastered w/ bonus tracks

40th Anniversary edition of the most successful album by THE CLASH. Despite having two of their biggest songs “Should I Stay or Should I Go”, “Rock the Casbah” & the fantastic “Straight to Hell”, this album is where the band started to splinter off into different directions. Despite the drama, this is still a fantastic record. This remastered version also features a disc of outtakes from 1981-82. It’s great to have this classic in the racks once again. RECOMMENDED.

PORRIDGE RADIO – Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder to the Sky LP (Secretly Canadian)

PORRIDGE RADIO returns with their album & they’ve created a really unique sound this time around. A mix of sort of shambolic post-punk ala RAINCOATS with interesting lyrics & a pop sensibility that reminds us of BELLE & SEBASTIAN. It seems like they’re really onto something here…

DANIEL VILLARREAL – Panamá 77 LP/CD (International Anthem)

Yet another superb record off the Int’l Anthem label, this one from the Chicagoan DANIEL VILLARREAL, drummer with DOS SANTOS and a great composer in his own right. VILLARREAL’s jazz is swirling, psychedelic and based in Latin folk, almost like attaching a rhythmically Latin sensibility to SUN RA or WILLIAM ONYEABOR. Featuring the talents of JEFF PARKER, AQUILES NAVARRO, MARTA SOFIA HONER and others for these hybrid improvisations, this comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

NEIL YOUNG – Citizen Kane JR Blues 1974: Live at the Bottom Line LP (Reprise) now on vinyl!!

If you ask any Neil head about their favorite bootlegs, this legendary show from the Bottom Line in 1974 will almost certainly come up. The surprise show at this small club was recorded just before the release of the classic “On the Beach” album & a number of those songs are featured here along with a few other classics. This one is an audience recording so it’s on the lo-fi side for a legit release but it works for the mellow almost downer vibe of the set list. Some of the stage banter has been sadly cut out including the famous “honey slides” story but supposedly you can hear that on the archives site. We’re so glad this show is finally available in a legit form. RECOMMENDED.

SAADA BONAIRE – 1992 LP/CD (Captured Tracks)

We were really big fans of the 80s recordings that Captured Tracks released by the German new wave/dance group SAADA BONAIRE. The project existed into the mid 90s but their later recordings were thought to be lost until a cassette was recently discovered in a basement in Berlin. These songs display new directions the project was headed before it dissolved with trip-hop, house & early 90s R&B sounds mixed in with their 80s new wave/new romantic vibes. 

PAN AMERICAN – The Patience Fader LP (Kranky) now on vinyl

The former LABRADFORD member Mark Nelson returns with a new PAN AMERICAN album for 2022. Recorded over the past 2 pandemic years, “The Patient Fader” is a collection of dusty ambient Americana guitar pieces & longing sounds of verb’d out pedal steel. This reminds us of some of our all-time favorite ambient guitar music on the great David Sylvian & Holger Czukay albums, DIRTY THREE guitarist Mick Turner’s playing etc…RECOMMENDED.

 NORMA TANEGA – I’m the Sky: Studio & Demo Recordings, 1964-1971 LP/CD (Anthology)

What a great collection here from the California folk singer NORMA TANEGA, most known for her 1966 album “Walking My Cat Named Dog” and the cut “You’re Dead”. This partially covers her time from the Village coffee house scene to the release of that first album, while it also focuses on her time in London and making both an unreleased second album “Snow Cycles” and a cult favorite third, “I Don’t Think It Will Hurt If You Smile”. The material here ranges from simple, unadorned folk pop tunes to rich Americana rock. Fans of KAREN DALTON, JUDEE SILL, BILL FAY and LAURA NYRO will find a lot to love here! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

SHARON VAN ETTEN – We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong LP/CD limited color or black vinyl

Sharon Van Etten has been one of the best songwriters for the past decade or so & “We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong” is her 6th album.Recorded at her home in L.A. this one is a slightly darker album which isn’t surprising as it was recorded during the pandemic. Most of the songs are synth driven pop songs with deep & introspective lyrics. RECOMMENDED.

WARPAINT – Radiate Like This LP/CD (Virgin)

The talented quartet WARPAINT are back with their first album in six years & their first on Virgin. As always the backbone of the band is the rhythm section of Stella Mozgawa & Jenny Lee Lindberg who make their polyrhythmic beats sound almost effortless. The album has a mostly mellow vibe & the songs grab you quickly. Another great one from this excellent band. RECOMMENDED.

CARAMBOLAGE – Bon Voyage LP/CD (Tapete) & “Carambolage” & “Eilzustellung Expres” CD

CARAMBOLAGE were one of the first German all female New Wave bands. Rhythmic new wave with some post-punk & even ska elements at times & lyrics in German. Cool stuff!

COIL – Musick to Play in the Dark 2 LP/CD (Dais) Limited color or black vinyl

Dais delivers another essential COIL reissue, this time the 2000 acid fried classic “Musick to Play in the Dark 2.” Recorded at a 8 bedroom estate on the West Coast of England, this one is demented journey of post THROBBING GRISTLE electronic experimentation, nods at the BBC Radiophonic sound, Mort Garson etc…all wrapped-up in that classic COIL drug haze. RECOMMENDED.

MELODY’S ECHO CHAMBER – Emotional Eternal LP/CD (Domino) limited color or black vinyl

This third album from French musician Melody Prochet continues to draw from the silky dream pop of COCTEAU TWINS and BEACH HOUSE as well as electro psych-funk in the mold of TAME IMPALA or later TORO Y MOI. Added is a newer sense of lyrical and sonic clarity, weaving ideas on growth and hardship through arrangements that have never sounded so simultaneously dense and airy. Another excellent record for Prochet. RECOMMENDED.

SPIRITUALIZED – Everything Was Beautiful LP/CD (Fat Possum) limited indie version or regular black vinyl 

The 2022 SPIRITUALIZED album starts off with a woman’s voice speaking the album title & the artwork is a play on a box of pills. Sound familiar? It should because Jason Pierce’s now legendary “Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space” also featured those two characteristics. One big difference on this one is the massive amount of musicians that participate, which sits at about 30. The last few albums have felt a little more “inward” but this one is BIG, with dense orchestrated & joyous explosions of notes. Jason Pierce is one of our favorite artists ever so anything new by the man is very welcome here. RECOMMENDED.

TOMBERLIN – I Don’t Know Who Needs to Hear This… LP/CD/TAPE (Saddle Creek) limited color or black vinyl

Gorgeous, meditative indie folk from TOMBERLIN, with a similar vibe to HALEY HEYNDERICKX, LOMELDA and PHOEBE BRIDGERS or JULIEN BAKER when they’re at their softest. Very tasteful, small, and organic arrangements (even in the case of the smattering synths) that accentuate her tender songwriting without consuming it. And believe it when we say these songs will have you crying like a big baby in no time. Great stuff on Saddle Creek!

TORO Y MOI – Mahal LP/CD/TAPE (Dead Oceans) limited color or black vinyl

The Bay Area’s Chaz Bear has been at it as TORO Y MOI for over 12 years now. “Mahal” is a mostly upbeat collection of pop songs with a psychedelic edge. We’re hints of PRINCE, Bill Withers, TAME IMPALA & BECK but it’s all filtered through Bear’s unique perspective. Fun stuff!

UNDEATH – It’s Time…To Rise From the Grave LP (Prosthetic)

This is the second album from the great Rochester death metal band UNDEATH. The first was drenched in murky slime & this one is more forward & maybe catchy? As catchy as this sort of thing gets we guess. These guys are really onto something great here…RECOMMENDED.

Apologies for not posting the list last week, we were simply too busy with the big new releases & events. Here’s the two releases dates combined into one update

DADAWAH – Peace & Love LP (Antarctica Starts Here)

Beautiful reissue of this dark & hypnotic 1974 album from Jamaican singer & hand drummer DADAWAH. There’s not many reggae records out there that sound like this. There’s no rhythm guitar, instead the guitar parts are all rambling leads sort of like if one of Fela’s Africa 70 guitarists was drunkenly attempting to play blues. This is about as psychedelic as reggae records great. INCREDIBLE

GUIDED BY VOICES – Devil Between My Toes LP (Scat) limited color or black vinyl

Who could have predicted back in 1987 that 35 years later, Dayton’s GUIDED BY VOICES would record & release over 100 albums with thousands of songs. “Devil Between My Toes” is the first ever GBV album & it’s available once again via Scat Records. 

PLOSIVS – Plosivs LP (Swami)

What do you get when you cross Pinback’s emotionally charged vocals with Rocket From the Crypts powerful guitars? You get one of the best power-pop records of the young year. With Rob Crow (Pinback) on lead vocals & Swami John Reis (RFTC, Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu) sharing the guitar duties, this self titled set of punk & rock n’ roll tunes is very much what you’d expect from this SoCal super group, a heavy, chuggy guitar band that doesn’t skimp on the melodies. If you’re into the Foo Fighters, or Rival Schools you should definitely give this a shot.

RAUM – DAUGHTER LP (Yellow Electric)

Back in 2016 GROUPER’s Liz Harris & Jefre Cantu_Ledesma were in magical Marfa, TX for a residency with filmmaker Paul Clipson. The duo slowly worked on the recordings & during that time Clipson sadly passed away in 2018. After some time processing their grief, the record started to take on more of a form. The result is a beautiful 60 minutes album of ambient pieces & sound collage intended to be listened to all the way through. RECOMMENDED.

CISCO SWANK & LUKE TITUS – Some Things Take Time LP/CD (Sooper)

A really cool collaboration between the Chicago drummer Luke Titus & the NYC rapper Cisco Swank. Titus is a ridiculously good drummer & the music has a deep jazz influence throughout & Swank’s mellow style flows perfectly over top. Featuring guest spots from Chicago stars Saba & Femdot, this is truly a great Chicago-centric rap album for 2022.

TEMPERS – New Meaning LP (Dais) limited color or black

TEMPERS are a NYC duo that make catchy but dark synth pop with driving drum machine pulses & vocals washed-out in reverb. Fans of BOY HARSHER, DRAB MAJESTY, the Italians Do It Better label etc…will dig this.

KURT VILE – Watch My Moves LP/CD (Verve) limited color or black vinyl

Philly’s Kurt Vile makes his major label debut on Verve with “(Watch My Moves.)” Aside from switching labels & getting older, not much has changed. Vile is still the hardest working slacker out there & he’s still writing great songs. This album was mostly recorded at home but it has a big studio sound. We’re just glad that one of our favorite artists is still out there plugging away. RECOMMENDED.

WET LEG – Wet Leg LP/CD (Domino) yellow vinyl

This highly anticipated debut from Isle of Wight duo WET LEG comes hot off the heels of their hit single “Chaise Lounge”. This picks up where that left off, combining snappy pop songwriting with sardonic mantra lyricism. Don’t miss this one!

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Saturno 2000: La Rebajada de los Sonideros 1962-1983 LP/CD (Analog Africa)

Analog Africa continues their explorations into Latin America, this time focusing on Mexico and the Rebajada sub-genre. Slowing down Cumbia into something danceable and hazy, DJs and sound system operators in Mexico City and Monterrey reframed the sounds influenced by South American music to give it a more dream-like quality. There are elements of Jamaican dub (some SCIENTIST-y influence on this) and Houston chopped & screwed (A lil DJ SCREW in here too) to be found, but this is absolutely Mexican through and through. RECOMMENDED for both the enthusiast and novice alike!

ALABASTER DEPLUME – Gold LP (International Anthem)

This is the second Int’l Anthem record for ALABASTER DePLUME, the Mancunian saxophonist and composer whose work is rooted in simple, evocative folk-based melody and rich arrangement. DePLUME builds on this, at times sounding like MOONDOG, at others taking cues from ALICE COLTRANE, even drawing from late 19th cent. composers like RAVEL and BARTOK with his approach to folk styles. There’s a living, breathing aspect to this music found in the intercutting chatter and applause, focusing the album on music-making communal aspect. RECOMMENDED!

MYRIAM GENDRON – Ma Delire: Songs of Love Lost & Found LP (Feeding Tube) now on vinyl!

The second album by the Montreal based musician Myriam Gendron is an exploration & reinterpretation of Canadian, French & American traditional music. Gendron has a somewhat plain voice & that might sound like critique but it’s an authentic quality & to us it’s what makes some of these songs gut-wrenchingly beautiful. Songs sung in English & French with efficient fingerstyle acoustic guitar & occasional minimal electric songs that remind us of early CAT POWER or DIRTY THREE. The great “Colour Green” by Sibylle Baier comes to mind along with Leonard Cohen & Karen Dalton. It’s all something that on paper sounds interesting enough but shouldn’t actually be this great. A truly remarkable record. RECOMMENDED.

MAX ROACH – We Insist! Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite LP (Sowing) 

This incredible 1960 album by Max Roach has been going through a bit of a renaissance lately & it’s surprising it took this long. Ahead of its time in 1960, Roach with vocalist Abbey Lincoln, Booker Little, Coleman Hawkins on one tune & Olatunji on another with a few other players created this suite of tunes inspired by the Civil Rights Movement that was radically picking up steam at the time. Some truly avant-garde passages & politically driven lyrics that sound more like late 60s jazz than almost anything else happening at the time. A TRUE CLASSIC!

YASUAKI SHIMIZU – Kiren LP/CD (Palto Flats)

We’re MASSIVE fans of Yasuaki Shimizu’s “Kakashi” & the MARIAH “Utakata No Hibi” albums so this previously unreleased follow-up from 1984 is very exciting. Like those records, these are slick studio projects with great production & arrangements. Shimizu was influenced by music from around the world including jazz & these instrumental songs are a pastiche of the Japanese City Pop sound, art pop like TALKING HEADS & BRIAN ENO, & minimalist 20th Century classical music. Remarkable stuff.

NOT METAL IN THE METAL SECTION ALERT!!! Denver’s BLOOD INCANTATION got the metal world in a tizzy when they announced that they’re next one was going to be an all ambient album. This really shouldn’t surprise anyone that’s a fan of the band though since guitarist Paul Riedl has released ambient albums as HOVERKRAFT not to mention that when the band stopped through the store their purchases consisted of mostly horror soundtracks & psych records. BLOOD INCANTATION records have always been heavy on atmosphere so deep synth journeys ala TANGERINE DREAM/Klaus Schulze early TANGERINE DREAM makes sense to us! RECOMMENDED.

DESTROYER – Labyrinthitis LP/CD (Merge) black or limited “jade & ivory” Peak Vinyl

Canada’s poet-derelict-laureate Dan Bejar makes his 2022 return with “Labyrinthitis”, a sumptuous, lyrical, romantic and altogether enigmatic collection of lounge rock that is the most dance-forward of his career. As always, Bejar’s unique voice and articulation sit front and center in the mix, but with a punchier arrangement of sharp synths and electronic drum machines that take off from where records like “Kaputt” and “Ken” left, aping sounds from 70s/80s disco pop acts like NEW ORDER and DONNA SUMMER. Bejar & co. have made one of the best records in DESTROYER’s long catalog, remaining wry and self-referential throughout. On Merge and RECOMMENDED!

ALDOUS HARDING – Warm Chris LP/CD (4AD)

2022 record for singer-songwriter ALDOUS HARDING is a rich, folk-influenced collection that draws its sound from artists like JONI MITCHELL, NICO and (for a more recent vintage) CATE LE BON. Catchy, off-kilter, warm and yet weary, this is an excellent art-rock album for an overcast April morning. On 4AD & RECOMMENDED.

BRANKO MATAJA – Over Fields & Mountains LP (Numero) limited color or black vinyl

Beautiful & haunting instrumental guitar recordings from the early 70s made by the Yugoslavian immigrant Branko Mataja. The Los Angeles based musician released a few records to mostly little acclaim but they were recently re-discovered by Numero. We’re not actually sure what effect Mataja was using to get these sounds but it has an almost bell-like quality. It could just be delay & some tape effects but whatever it is, it has a really cool sound.

2022 album from the L.A. based band VR SEX that features members of DRAB MAJESTY & ANTIOCH ARROW. Melodic but tough sounding songs that remind us of greats like KILLING JOKE, RED LORRY YELLOW LORRY, THE CHAMELEONS etc…

DANIEL WYCHE – Earthwork LP (American Dreams)

“Earthwork” is the 2022 album by the Chicago scene veteran Daniel Wyche. Four compositions including one side-long piece of guitar exploration with electronic manipulation. Think of Jim O’Rourke’s more experimental, drone based work.
