After a few years of making music in collaboration with old buddies BILL CALLAHAN and MATT SWEENEY (and new buddy MDOU MOCTAR), WILL OLDHAM returns again to the graceful solitude of his long-running BONNIE “PRINCE” BILLY project. His craggy voice & whimsical lyrics are first rate as always, wrapped up tightly in spare Americana & chamber pop stylings that suit him like a homespun knit sweater. He’s backed here by a disarmingly skilled group of musicians, with strings and sax and the gorgeous harmonies of vocalist Dane Waters, who give intention to every single note in service of Oldham’s dizzying melodies. We’re already looking forward to returning to this one over and over again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

You’d be forgiven for thinking maybe you threw on the new QOTSA by mistake when the opening riff on THE HIVES’ first album in over a decade comes roaring out of your speakers. Give or take a few outliers (and these squirrelly Swedes always allow for at least a few on every LP), these are some of the heaviest & hardest tracks they’ve ever cut, drawing as much from prime AC/DC and KISS as they do from thee typical STONES ‘n’ STOOGES well. Insanely fun (and insane) rock music – RECOMMENDED!
