Sophomore record from folk singer and harpist MIKAELA DAVIS settles into a lovely blend of 60s inspired pop psychedelia and gentle, pedal-steel inflected country. Great stuff on Kill Rock Stars! RECOMMENDED.

Blue Broderick drops another slab of winning power-pop under the DINERS banner with Domino, her first LP on Bar/None. Simple-but-effective lyrics, some real good guitar playing, and total nonstop hooks that make for a great throwback to the golden era of TWILLEY, EMITT RHODES, and classic Stiff Records fare like KIRSTY MacCOLL & WRECKLESS ERIC. There’s a thread of wistful melancholy running through these songs too that’ll serve us all well as a soundtrack to temps dropping and leaves falling. Fantastic stuff – HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Remember the summer of 2020, when great dance records like DUA LIPA’s Future Nostalgia and JESSIE WARE’s What’s Your Pleasure? were dropping at a steady clip and we were all chomping at the bit to get back out and party a bit even though it wasn’t quite safe yet? UK band GIRL RAY remember those dark days well, and it’s served as the inspiration for their super fun new LP Prestige. Glammy disco with hi-NRG and new wave influences, bright synths, canny strings, and droll vox. Fans of HAIM, HOT CHIP, and Random Access Memories -era DAFT PUNK will absolutely love this. RECOMMENDED!

First album since 2016 for this collective of Chicago weirdos, featuring members of CHEER-ACCIDENT and THE FLYING LUTTENBACHERS. LLG explores similar avant-garde territory, but with a more theatrical delivery and prog-y approach to melody and arrangement. RECOMMENDED!

Tatiana Triplin runs the label HRR and releases dance music under the moniker NONDI_, channeling Chicago footwork, Detroit techno and European breakcore, all rendered through gauzy, impressionistic tones that evoke genres of solitude like vaporwave. Excellent home listening material! RECOMMENDED!
