BRIGITTE CALLS ME BABY is a fantastic name for a band. We have to start there, but that’s certainly not the end for this fantastic Chicago group. They’re going to have a bit of a hard time shaking comparisons to THE SMITHS due to the velvety vocal stylings of Wes Leavins & the sort of jangly guitar parts here. It also owes a lot to the guitar rock of the early 2000s with a little bit of ARCTIC MONKEYS & THE STROKES thrown in. Their sounds & influences are quickly recognizable without feeling derivative at all & if you like any of the aforementioned bands, or maybe you’re into ROY ORBISON or CHRIS ISAAK… You should grab this one. RECOMMENDED!
Hard to believe it’s been 10 years of Double Cup. Here’s what we had to say about this great Chicago record back in 2013. We’ve come a long way… “Sadly, this is the final album from Chicago’s DJ RASHAD, who passed away in 2014. But what a final long-player! Double Cup is easily the biggest Footwork album that’s been released thus far. FYI, the name of the Footwork genre is born of a dancing style associated with the music, which evolved from juke. Repetitive, bass-heavy dance music that will appeal to House fans, for sure.” RIP DJ RASHAD! RECOMMENDED!

Long Island cult punk heroes INCENDIARY return with (the awesomely titled) Change the Way You Feel About Pain, the long-awaited follow-up to 2017’s killer Thousand Mile Stare. We’re happy to report that this is worth the wait and then some. Bone-crushing riffs and breakdowns pile up relentlessly under Brendan Garrone’s blunt-force vocals, which are often a ringer for Zach De La Rocha and make this a worthwhile pickup for fans of RAGE just as much for the NYHC heads. Every song here is prime heel wrestler entrance theme music – real ones know. This is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

West TX thrash/hardcore crossover goons JUDICIARY drop another heater on Closed Casket Activities. They push the metallic edge of their music even further here with help from producer ARTHUR RIZK, already a legend in the scene for his work on the classic POWER TRIP albums. Monstrous riffs course through this thing like sandworms while perfectly calibrated breakdowns and masterful shredding bring the violence. THIS RULES. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Clocking in at barely 10 minutes, it’s the feeling of existential dread & hopelessness boiled down to its most immediate & essential. Reckless veteran Dylan Sowle delivers vocals that would fit in nicely on an SST Records comp, with music that straddles the line between thrash punk & post-hardcore. For fans of: RITES OF SPRING, CIRCLE JERKS, the absurdity of human existence. RECOMMENDED!

20 Buck Spin cap another banner year for their label with this split release from two of the best bands on their roster. DREAM UNENDING waylay the CURE-isms of the brilliant Song of Salvation for slower tempos and a heavy grunge feel with bluesy leads & extended solos a la 90s Metallica and even Pearl Jam (but with pitch black vocals). On their side, WORM continue sharpening their death metal attack, adding ethereal synths to the mix that amp up the cosmic & otherworldly elements of their music even higher. Whether this is just a one-off (two-off??) or an exciting tease of what’s to come from both bands, doesn’t matter – this is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Continuing the Artificial Intelligence Series reissue campaign, Warp reintroduces us to RICHIE HAWTIN’s full length debut, a transcendent ambient techno record that would define a sound of the 90s and chart the path forward for HAWTIN as a force in avant-garde dance music. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

3rd album of ’23 (and 39th overall!!!) from ROBERT POLLARD’s GBV is his most bracing, immediately accessible pop record since he shacked up with Ric Ocasek for Do the Collapse. Infectious ear worms abound but with less scuzz than usual, exploding out of the speakers in glorious hi-fi that especially suits the crisp guitar tones & bright riffage of Bob’s co-conspirators on this current hot streak, Doug Gillard & Bobby Bare Jr. His lyrics are extra special on this one, too, surreal as ever but also disarmingly candid about time & aging. Bottom line is Bob’s a master & we’re lucky to have this. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

TIRZAH and her collaborator MICA LEVI return to the club with trip9love…?, trading out the stark, open spaces of Colourgrade for murky, claustrophobic beat music, giving TIRZAH’s sultry soul delivery a certain unsettling menace. Individual tracks blend together with the same rumbling beat pattern, giving this the sense of a club set, but both TIRZAH and LEVI are able to create a lot of variance in melody, atmosphere and tone. The result is as excellent as it is strange. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Tiktok & streaming has been very kind to a few shoegaze vets like SLOWDIVE & DUSTER & supposedly even early 90s band DROP NINETEENS saw a big enough bump in plays to consider getting the band back together & we’re really glad that they did. This record surprised us right out of the gate with tight arrangements, memorable songs & an overall confidence that you wouldn’t expect after a 30 year break. You can hear hints of their past but like the SLOWDIVE reunion records, this band is making new music, not just rehashing their old sound. Fans of early 90s shoegaze, Flying Nun bands like THE CHILLS & THE BATS, INTERPOL, UNREST etc… should check this out. RECOMMENDED.

Sweden’s now long-running psych rock collective gets a bit more mellow, trading in noise guitar freakouts and faux-tribal workouts for swampy, chugging acid motorik that can sound a bit like classic BLACK ANGELS (or at their most uptempo a bit of KIKAGAKU MOYO). Always RECOMMENDED!

If you’ve been listening to Mick Jenkins for a while, you know that he usually crafts his records with a dense & connected theme, & The Patience continues that trend with a record that sees an MC reacting to a changing world. It’s also a bit of a departure, showcasing Jenkin’s excellent ear with some less jazzy beats. In fact this record is downright HARD! It really knocks, & Mick’s delivery is more cutting, more aggressive than we ever remember hearing… RECOMMENDED.

Imagine chopped & screwed trip-hop mixed with bedroom R&B tastefully drenched in beautiful reverb. Bass & sub frequencies are utilized expertly along with field recordings all highlighted by some truly wonderful lead vocals. If you ever dreamed of ERYKAH BADU or SOLANGE style vocals over GROUPER or slowed-down trip hop then this record is going to be a dream for you. RECOMMENDED.

Following hot off the heels of their excellent Tracey Denim LP from earlier this year, BAR ITALIA keeps busy with The Twits, expanding from moody, lo-fi shoegaze and alt-rock into tape-affected psychedelia. Hard to say if the title is at all inspired by Roald Dahl – the band can be a bit cheeky with references, or otherwise just detached – or if it’s a dyslexic form of “twist,” but either way it’s a great follow up. RECOMMENDED!
Brooklyn songwriter Will Anderson makes the jump from lo-fi DIY recordings to big money Third Man Records for his 2nd LP under the HOTLINE TNT banner. Cartwheel splits the difference perfectly between capital H Heavy shoegaze and bright power pop with a hardcore sensibility, guaranteed to give you the same endorphin rush you might get from classic MBV and PUMPKINS but also from Will’s peers like DAZY and WEDNESDAY. These songs have some of the best riffs & catchiest hooks we’ve heard all year. If we make it through the winter, this one’s gonna sound real good with the windows down on that first day of Spring. PLAY IT LOUD. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Marnie’s trademarks – math riffage, insane fingertapping, and perfectly deployed power chords – are all in play, plus curveballs like a surf-rock Morricone cover and some of the most straightforward pop songs she’s ever made. The Peruvian-born, Berlin-based DJ & producer SOFIA KOURTESIS has been a rising star in club music for the last couple of years, having been featured on Resident Advisor lists and also playing a ripping Pitchfork set in 2022 following some excellent EPs. Madres is her first full-length, blending the sounds of effusively bright leftfield house, muscular two-step and sample work that draws from jazz, cumbia and Peruvian folk music. SAVED! is the first LP released under Kristin Hayter’s given name after retiring her LINGUA IGNOTA project in 2022. On paper it seems like a big departure – a gospel record combining traditional Christian hymns with new songs written in the same spirit. But friend, if you drop the needle on this expecting something straightforward you will totally get knocked on your ass. The mood is good & apocalyptic, coursing with fire & brimstone. Songs bleed & warp into each other, often ending abruptly when they get too jaunty. Rev. Hayter’s clarion voice (equal parts SINEAD O’CONNOR and NICK CAVE) is laid bare more than ever, accompanied by piano, guitar, tape hiss & her own demonically multi-tracked vocals… with the occasional disembodied scream thrown in for good measure. This has instantly become one of the strangest, most unhinged records to grace our racks, and we’re grateful for it. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Special edition reissue of this 2015 collab between Chicago rapper/producer JEREMIAH JAE and producer L’ORANGE that’s held up as a modern classic in the years since it dropped. The “noir-hop” tag coined for this project perfectly describes the vibe – cold, raw, and gripping as a late night gangster flick on TCM. SICK…… GUB is BEAU WANZER + ALEX BARNETT (CHAMPAGNE MIRRORS), Chicago legends who will need no introduction to fans of dark & surreal dance music. Their first LP as a duo plunges you into the shadow world with low grooves and subtle synth work. Chill and dubby but still profoundly evil – perfect listening for the cold months to come. on SOPHOMORE LOUNGE + RECOMMENDED.

This third record from experimental soul artist L’RAIN gets theatrical, with her dramatic vocalizations built up around dark orchestral sound design, yet given some levity with wry humor. It’s not accurate to pigeonhole this record exclusively as “soul”; you’ll hear guitar-driven STROKES-esque shamble and icy dance rock in the vein of 90s BJORK, but with flecks of gospel/R&B that will remind some of SOLANGE. Great stuff! RECOMMENDED.

While Formentera II lacks some cohesiveness, you couldn’t ask for better songs. That’s what makes METRIC’s 20 year career. They’re incredible songwriters with a great grasp of arrangement. Whether they’re giving you cleansing disco rock, or slower, chiller space-y tunes, they’re always themselves. This is for folks who like the YEAH YEAH YEAHS or BLONDIE. A near perfect melding of synthy dance & guitar rock n roll. RECOMMENDED.

After the Magic is a fantastic exercise in rock experimentation from anonymous South Korean artist PARANNOUL, reinventing shoegaze, emo, drum’n’bass and dream pop into a maximalist esoteric collage style. On Top Shelf and absolutely RECOMMENDED!

2023 has been a huge year for death metal, especially for the Toronto based TOMB MOLD. This album has been hyped as much as an indie death metal release can be hyped, complete with memes & Twitter beefs. It’s no surprise to us that this lives up to that hype because TOMB MOLD has been one of our favorite death metal bands over the past few years. This one is perhaps a bit more technical but it definitely sounds like TOMB MOLD, complex but always brutal. RECOMMENDED.
