>> DEL THE FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN – No Need for Alarm 2LP (Get On Down) *30th Anniversary – #’d & Ltd. Color Vinyl
Sophomore release from DEL THE FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN, & 30 years later it’s become a classic. Del’s first LP was put together with some help from his cousin, ICE CUBE & it should be no surprise to listeners that this second record, produced primarily by Hiero crew members Domino, A-Plus, Casual & Del himself, is a bit Jazzier & less G-Funky. Del’s got a great ear, a great pen, & an incredible voice, & if you don’t have a copy of this recOrd, you should grab this anniversary release before it’s too late. Promise you it’s worth it. RECOMMENDED!
>> ARIEL KALMA, JEREMIAH CHIU & MARTA SOFIA HONER – The Closest Thing to Silence LP/CD (International Anthem)
This collaboration between French-Australian new age luminary ARIEL KALMA and Int’l Anthem experimentalists JEREMIAH CHIU and MARTA SOFIA HONER was born at first from a meeting on BBC Radio’s “Late Junction” series, where the trio would exchange and work on fragments of each other’s original music. The initial twenty minute broadcast inspired them to expand their collaboration into a full length album, weaving together classical minimalism, fourth world rhythmic jazz, drone & sound design into a captivating collage. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
>> THE LAST DINNER PARTY – Prelude to Ecstasy LP (Island) *”Midnight” Black Vinyl w/ poster
UK five-piece THE LAST DINNER PARTY have built up an impressive amount of hype in their short time as a band, cracking the charts overseas and opening for the STONES all without a full-length to their name. Now Prelude to Ecstasy is finally here and, frankly, it rules. Bombastic & theatrical alt-pop in the vein of SPARKS or KATE BUSH with hooks for days, a really inventive rhythm section, and some serious guitar heroics that also line this up neatly with ST VINCENT or T.REX. Produced by JAMES FORD (JESSIE WARE, ARCTIC MONKEYS) and HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Chicago “experimental heavy band” METH. are back with another heater, their second on Prosthetic Records. Shame’s seven tracks assault the senses relentlessly with pummeling tempos & harsh sonics that, in concert with the vox & lyrics, offer a stark, harrowing glimpse into cycles of addiction, trauma & depression. They channel many of the same influences as peers like CHAT PILE and PRIMITIVE MAN – i.e. if you’re a fan of GODFLESH, THE JESUS LIZARD, SWANS BIG BLACK/SHELLAC etc, you’ll find lots to love here and you’ll relish the challenging listen. Another Chi-town drop we can be proud of… RECOMMENDED!

>> BENNY THE BUTCHER – Everybody Can’t Go LP/CD (Def Jam)
Griselda’s knife-man is always ready to kill a beat. BENNY THE BUTCHER has an uncomplicated flow & style that’s never out of place. That’s not to say he’s not a great lyricist, that’s to say that sometimes the gymnastics aren’t the draw. See, what Benny does is put together rhymes, flows, & beats for a complete experience, you can vibe to it, but the drums knock hard enough to get people on the dance floor. You can put it on at the party, but your writer-ly friends can rock with the penmanship. It’s a one-stop shop for any fan of good Hip-Hop music. RECOMMENDED!
>> FUTURE ISLANDS – People Who Aren’t There Anymore LP (4AD) *Black or Indie Exclusive Clear Vinyl
7th full length album for Baltimore indie mainstays FUTURE ISLANDS, rooting themselves again in their trademark synth-pop sound influenced instrumentally by NEW ORDER and THE HUMAN LEAGUE with Sam Herring’s recognizable bellow floating above. On 4AD and RECOMMENDED!
>> ZANDER RAYMOND – To Have Several Lives LP (Sound As Language) *Remastered – Ltd. Green Vinyl ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶
Beautiful ambient record from Chicago’s ZANDER RAYMOND that was originally released in 2022. To Have Several Lives centers on improvisation, making use of modular synths and samples to construct a non-linear sound design. The result is a beautiful, often surprising set of vignettes, sketching outer worlds and inviting Inner calm. Now newly remastered for vinyl, this comes HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
>> TY SEGALL – Three Bells 2LP/CD/CS (Drag City)
Three Bells might be the most sprawling record TY SEGALL has ever made, and if you’re familiar with Ty’s work then you know that’s no small feat. Many of these tracks aren’t “songs” so much as they are densely layered suites: they start at one point before morphing over several minutes into an entirely different beast, and then they build to a mighty crescendo before moving on to the next cycle. If you imagine the Abbey Road medley made album length then you’re not far off, but you’d also have to factor in Ty’s recent knack for channeling as many genres as possible – garage & psych of course, but also new wave, freak folk, knotty funk, art punk, and the most abrasive bursts of interstitial noise this side of NIN’s Downward Spiral. The sprawl is tied together by a massive sense of groove and an almost jazzy swing to the drums (played by Ty himself), lending the set a swagger that few of Ty’s contemporaries can rival. It’s always a thrill when a songwriter as brilliant as Ty challenges himself & his own conventions, and even more so when they stick the landing. Produced with COOPER CRAIN (✶ ✶ ✶ ✶), on DRAG CITY and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
>> THE SMILE – Wall of Eyes LP (XL) *Black or Indie Exclusive Blue Vinyl w/ limited listening party swag available with purchase while supplies last
This sophomore full length from JONNY GREENWOOD, THOM YORKE and TOM SKINNER drapes their unconventional rhythms in a gauzy, dream-pop atmosphere, at times channeling orchestral, spiritual jazz with textured string & brass arrangements and swirling cosmic synth. Unlike many of the later RADIOHEAD efforts that appear as immaculate studio soundcraft, Wall of Eyes seems instead to embrace disharmony. The ideas are frenetic and loose, and neither YORKE nor GREENWOOD have been as energetic as songwriters in years as they are here. RECOMMENDED!
>> SPRINTS – Letter to Self LP (City Slang) *Ltd. Red Vinyl
Young Irish band SPRINTS drop their debut full-length on City Slang, building off the buzz of a pair of great EPs & a reputation for a ferocious live show. They level up from their road-tested garage-punk sound with a heavy grunge feel that places this in the same continuum as classic HOLE & PJ HARVEY, even as the tempos amp up a la prime MOTÖRHEAD. Band leader Karla Chubb’s world-beating voice & lyrics are the icing on the cake, tying the songs together to make a piece of defiantly cathartic art. Instantly one of the best rock albums of 2024. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
>> VARIOUS – Sonic Transmutations 8LP Box (Clone)
Sonic Transmutations is an extended compilation album celebrating over three decades of Clone Records. Marking the 31 years – which is coincidentally the national Dutch telephone code – the 8×12 inch box set draws together veteran talent and emerging iconoclasts, transmitting a frequency rooted the imprint’s signature blend of essential dance music while journeying off into territories unknown. In a constant state of unfolding, morphing across phases of matter, Sonic Transmutations purveys an elemental energy that stands in testament to Clone’s enduring legacy and explorations of sounds and structures. RECOMMENDED.

>> DANNY BROWN – Quaranta LP/CD (Warp) *Black or Ltd. Red Vinyl – One of Reckless’ Best of 2023 staff picks now in stock!
After a relatively quiet couple of years, DANNY BROWN got busy in 2023, as Quaranta followed his avant-goofball collaboration with JPEGMAFIA on Scaring the Hoes. Quaranta was written during that interim, and showcases BROWN’s more introspective, reflective side. Lots of jazzy, proggy leftfield production on this – partially helped by THE ALCHEMIST – with features by KASSA OVERALL, MIKE and BRUISER WOLF. EXCELLENT and RECOMMENDED!
>> 90 DAY MEN – We Blame Chicago 5LP Box (Numero Group) *Black or Ltd. “Super Illuminary” Vinyl ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶
The late 90s/early 00s was a brilliant time in Chicago music history & one of the finest bands from that era was 90 DAY MEN. They got their start in the St. Louis punk & emo scene then relocated to Chicago. Their sound was a mix of Touch & Go style post-punk & WIRE/BAUHAUS influenced art rock with a solid but fluid rhythm section & towards the end the addition of the Fender Rhodes which gave them a really unique sound. Guitarist/vocalist Brian Case went on form DISAPPEARS and FACS as well as releasing multiple solo records; Bassist Rob Lowe formed LICHENS & worked with Johann Johannsson on the Arrival soundtrack & scored the Candyman remake; and drummer Cayce Key played in BLOODIEST. Their 3 albums are included in this box along with some outtakes & Peel Sessions & another Chicago legend in his own right Tim Kinsella wrote the liner notes. RECOMMENDED!
>> LOU REED – Hudson River Wind Meditations 2LP (Light In The Attic) *Remastered – Black or Coke Bottle Color Vinyl
Originally released in 2007 on a small indie label, LOU REED’s final solo album is available again thanks to Light in the Attic. This music wasn’t originally intended for public release – instead Reed composed these pieces as background music for his meditation, yoga & tai chi practice. The opening piece is nearly 30 minutes of deep, circulating synthesizer tones that sound like a machine breathing, maybe a deep space traveler in cryosleep. Some of the other pieces are darker, almost sine wave & tone experiments that would fit in well on a COIL album. We’re really glad to be able to stock this in our racks. RECOMMENDED!
>> WINDY & CARL – Unreleased Home Recordings 1992-1995 3CD Box (Windy & Carl) *#’d Ltd. Edition w/ signed insert
Originally released in 2020, this collection of home recordings from 1992-1995 is available again in a nifty box with a signed insert! Beautiful dream pop & drone from one of our all-time favorite duos. RECOMMENDED!
>> HIROSHI YOSHIMURA – Surround LP (Temporal Drift) *Remastered – Black or LITA Exclusive Blue Vinyl
This is the first ever reissue of the wonderful 1986 album Surround by HIROSHI YOSHIMURA. The master of Japanese environmental music was selected by an architect to compose music to compliment his company’s new living spaces. Similar to Yoshimura’s other environmental classics inspired by ENO’s ambient works, the music is a meant as a companion to the space where it’s being played or heard. Percussive & melodic vibraphone-esque sounds & mellow digital synth drones with Yoshimura’s expert use of reverb & space. Fans of his other great work, Eno, STEVE ROACH & MIDORI TAKADA should pick this up for sure. RECOMMENDED!

i think i missed a lot of good music this year but i did find time to listen to some Albums. asterisk means we carry/carried it here at the shop
→ Here are the ones i listened to “A Lot”: *Various – Spirit Cry Flutes and Bamboo Jews Harps from Papua New Guinea (Ideologic Organ) – spent alot of 2023 with bad tinnitus and this was the only music i found soothing at all. Half of the tracks is just dudes going “boing boing boing” on a mouth harp and then the other half is chirruping bamboo flutes. It’s seriously something else. Anyone interested in hearing something they’ve never heard before must cop *The Tubs – Dead Meat (Trouble…) – “ex Joanna Gruesome” always makes the year end list *Laurel Halo – Atlas (Awe) – i think i would call this “Ambient Plus” *Ratboys – The Window (Topshelf) – “The Gang Makes An Album With Chris Walla” *Various – Canto A Lo Divino (Mississippi) – gorgeous billion string guitar music. Probably all about Jesus but guess what so are Sufjan Stevens albums *Asher White – New Excellent Woman (Ba Da Bing) – kind of elephant six-y textures married to really rich harmonies and lyrics *Yo La Tengo – This Stupid World – Gods favorite band Curling – No Guitar – this band is sick as hell *Hydroplane – Selected Songs 1997-2003 (World Of Echo) – great retrospective from ex-Cat’s Miaow members thats somewhere between clasico indie pop and trip-hop.Thank you World of Echo, very cool! *Erik Hall – Canto Ostinato (Western Vinyl) – this piece by Simeon Ten Holt has been recorded 1,0000 times but this version really takes it all the way into “library-based period drama soundtrack” territory Frog – GROG – Frog’s back
→ Special award for great albums by local bands You Are The Garden – Six Leaf Clover Prathloons – Live Loons: The Bronze 8.4.23 *Ok Cool – Fawn – ive never felt older than when i saw this band live and they covered “A-Punk” Model Living – Alignment Doom Flower – Limestone Ritual (Record Label) Half Gringa – Ancestral Home *Tom Musick – The Many Moods of… – see you at Weegees
→ Here are albums i liked in theory and listened to a couple times and now theyre on this list: // “normal person” category *Subsonic Eye – All Around You (Topshelf, natürlich) – what’s going on in Singapore?? *@ – Mind Palace Music (Carpark) – new innovations in ungoogleability *En Attendant Ana – Principia (Trouble in Mind) *Black Country New Road – Live at Bush Hall (Ninja Tune) – i will NOT put the comma in this band name. do not ever ask me to do that *L’Rain – I Killed Your Dog (Mexican Summer) *Julie Byrne – The Greater Wings (Ghostly)
// “record store employee” category *Masahiro Takahashi – Humid Sun (Telephone Explosion) *Martinou – Chiral (Nousklaer) – fell off the dance music train in 2023. I will do better next year *American Analog Set – For Forever (Darla) – strips away the gauzy production & showcases the evil side of what many people are calling “Death Cab for people still renting in their 30s” *Mike Cooper – Life & Death in Paradise (Reissue) *Drop Nineteens – Hard Light (Wharf Cat) *Beau Wanzer + Champagne Mirrors – Gub (Sophomore Lounge)

-replacements – tim (let it bleed edition) –yeah not a new lp but hearing this incredible new mix from ed stasium, it might as well be.
-yeule – softscars –such well crafted, intricately produced and personal music. As catchy as it is great headphone music.
-a.s.o – a.s.o. –if u dig on trip-hop, u dig on this new duo out of berlin.
-hotline tnt – cartwheel –sick guitar driven lp out on third man records. like blown out teenage fanclub. sugary melodies/scuzzed out production.
-caroline polachek – desire, i want to turn into you –scratches my frou frou/imogen heap pop itch. probably the best vocalist in the game.
-bully – lucky for you –her 4th lp might be her best yet. emotional and sooo hooky. the kind of record that makes u immediately check for tour dates.
-pinkpantheress – heaven knows –great debut of bedroom dnb pop tunes. simultaneously feels nostalgic and like the future.
-grian chattan – chaos for the fly –poetic and intimate solo offering from fontaines dc frontman. engaging on a totally different level but just as excellent.
-anohni & the johnsons – my back was a bridge for you to cross –i feel this is her most accessible and moving lp yet which i think is saying a lot! as haunting as it is uplifting.
-vyva melinkolya – unbecoming –best shoegaze release of the year, all enveloping, comforting and heavy.

In 2023 I found these things worth discussing or recommending to other peoples: –Don’t miss the opening/ support acts. I finally got to see the Smoking Popes featuring one former co-worker (Hi Eli!), & a few bands I hadn’t really heard before, including Teenage Halloween (from New Jersey), who absolutely killed during their set, so much so, I went & bought a shirt. If you like power-pop like Pup, but with a little more Punk influence, you’ll love Teen Ween’s 2023 record Til You Return. –The best beat boxer I’ve ever seen live plays bass for Phum Viphurit. This is probably hyperbole, I’ve seen both Doug E. Fresh & Rahzel, but during Phum’s set at the House of Blues this unassuming but awesome bassist took center stage while Phum & the rest of the band took a break. Pom Tanapon picked up a mic & for 4 or 5 minutes the whole crowd sat transfixed as we saw the worldwide appeal of hip-hop music. It was such a cool little scene, a massive departure from the band’s normal psychedelic, summery, soul-adjacent guitar music, which you can hear on the record Viphurit dropped earlier this year on The Greng Jai Piece. –50 years in Hip Hop keeps growing & expanding. Some of the best rapping I heard all year came fromwomen. Big Boss Vette on Resilience, KenTheMan on Back to 304’n, Chika on Samson, & Flyana Boss on Hello Christ…; all of these sets have incredible performances on the mic. We also got some great “grown man raps” from acts that I really love to hear from: Black Milk dropped Everybody Good, Black Thought teamed up with El Michels Affair for Glorious Game, Oddisee gave us To What End, & Open Mike Eagle’s another triumph… all took approaches that we don’t always get to see in hip hop. We also got some excellent documentation, May the Lord Watch from Rap Portraits & What Had Happened Was season 4 from Stony Island Audio. –This was a pretty good year for R&B & Soul music. I went looking for good R&B this year, & boy howdy did I find it. Victoria Monet with Jaguar II, Jordan Ward with Forward, & Leon Thomas with Electric Dusk. And those are just the 3 I liked best. Each has a different vibe, each has a different approach, but they make you want to move, to feel & sing along. – We were due for a ska revival & I think it’s here! I for one welcome this development. It’s a good time for Bad Times Records who put a tour on with Kill Lincoln, We Are the Union, Catbite, & J. Navarro & the Traitors this year & also released Flying Racoon SuitMoonflower. We also got an ep from Fishbone, & a ripper of a record from ska-adjacent Jeff Rosenstock with Hellmode. There’s a lot of DIY pop music happening out there right now & I’m glad people are still making fun music for fun’s sake. I’m sure I missed something, but that’s what I remember from this year… Cheers!

>> BRIGITTE CALLS ME BABY – This House is Made of Corners EP (ATO) *Clear Pink Vinyl ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶
BRIGITTE CALLS ME BABY is a fantastic name for a band. We have to start there, but that’s certainly not the end for this fantastic Chicago group. They’re going to have a bit of a hard time shaking comparisons to THE SMITHS due to the velvety vocal stylings of Wes Leavins & the sort of jangly guitar parts here. It also owes a lot to the guitar rock of the early 2000s with a little bit of ARCTIC MONKEYS & THE STROKES thrown in. Their sounds & influences are quickly recognizable without feeling derivative at all & if you like any of the aforementioned bands, or maybe you’re into ROY ORBISON or CHRIS ISAAK… You should grab this one. RECOMMENDED!
Hard to believe it’s been 10 years of Double Cup. Here’s what we had to say about this great Chicago record back in 2013. We’ve come a long way… “Sadly, this is the final album from Chicago’s DJ RASHAD, who passed away in 2014. But what a final long-player! Double Cup is easily the biggest Footwork album that’s been released thus far. FYI, the name of the Footwork genre is born of a dancing style associated with the music, which evolved from juke. Repetitive, bass-heavy dance music that will appeal to House fans, for sure.” RIP DJ RASHAD! RECOMMENDED!
>> INCENDIARY – Change the Way You Feel About Pain LP (Closed Casket Activities) *Summer 2023 album now available – Color Vinyl
Long Island cult punk heroes INCENDIARY return with (the awesomely titled) Change the Way You Feel About Pain, the long-awaited follow-up to 2017’s killer Thousand Mile Stare. We’re happy to report that this is worth the wait and then some. Bone-crushing riffs and breakdowns pile up relentlessly under Brendan Garrone’s blunt-force vocals, which are often a ringer for Zach De La Rocha and make this a worthwhile pickup for fans of RAGE just as much for the NYHC heads. Every song here is prime heel wrestler entrance theme music – real ones know. This is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
>> JUDICIARY – Flesh + Blood LP (Closed Casket Activities) *Spring 2023 album now available– Color Vinyl
West TX thrash/hardcore crossover goons JUDICIARY drop another heater on Closed Casket Activities. They push the metallic edge of their music even further here with help from producer ARTHUR RIZK, already a legend in the scene for his work on the classic POWER TRIP albums. Monstrous riffs course through this thing like sandworms while perfectly calibrated breakdowns and masterful shredding bring the violence. THIS RULES. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
>> MISERABLE PEOPLE – Miserable EP CS (Rat’s Pizza) ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶
Chicago’s own MISERABLE PEOPLE deliver their debut EP of 5 fast & angry songs. Clocking in at barely 10 minutes, it’s the feeling of existential dread & hopelessness boiled down to its most immediate & essential. Reckless veteran Dylan Sowle delivers vocals that would fit in nicely on an SST Records comp, with music that straddles the line between thrash punk & post-hardcore. For fans of: RITES OF SPRING, CIRCLE JERKS, the absurdity of human existence. RECOMMENDED!

>> DREAM UNENDING & WORM – Starpath LP/CD (20 Buck Spin) *Black or Ltd. Pink & Blue Vinylw/ poster (11/24)
20 Buck Spin cap another banner year for their label with this split release from two of the best bands on their roster. DREAM UNENDING waylay the CURE-isms of the brilliant Song of Salvation for slower tempos and a heavy grunge feel with bluesy leads & extended solos a la 90s Metallica and even Pearl Jam (but with pitch black vocals). On their side, WORM continue sharpening their death metal attack, adding ethereal synths to the mix that amp up the cosmic & otherworldly elements of their music even higher. Whether this is just a one-off (two-off??) or an exciting tease of what’s to come from both bands, doesn’t matter – this is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Continuing the Artificial Intelligence Series reissue campaign, Warp reintroduces us to RICHIE HAWTIN’s full length debut, a transcendent ambient techno record that would define a sound of the 90s and chart the path forward for HAWTIN as a force in avant-garde dance music. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
>> GUIDED BY VOICES – Nowhere to Go but Up LP/CD (GBV Inc.) (11/24)
3rd album of ’23 (and 39th overall!!!) from ROBERT POLLARD’s GBV is his most bracing, immediately accessible pop record since he shacked up with Ric Ocasek for Do the Collapse. Infectious ear worms abound but with less scuzz than usual, exploding out of the speakers in glorious hi-fi that especially suits the crisp guitar tones & bright riffage of Bob’s co-conspirators on this current hot streak, Doug Gillard & Bobby Bare Jr. His lyrics are extra special on this one, too, surreal as ever but also disarmingly candid about time & aging. Bottom line is Bob’s a master & we’re lucky to have this. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
>> FELA KUTI – Fela Vinyl Box Set 6 7LP Box (Knitting Factory) *Box set curated by IDRIS ELBA
Acclaimed actor (and rapper/DJ) Idris Elba curates the sixth FELA KUTI vinyl box set, which features a 24 page book, a poster and notes by Afrobeat historian Chris May. With Open & Close, Music of Many Colors (featuring ROY AYERS), Stalemate, I Go Shout Plenty!!!, Live in Amsterdam (2LP), and Opposite People… This set, like any FELA set, comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
LA duo MONDE UFO makes lo-fi loungy psychedelia that dips its toes into free jazz, drone and ambient music. Originally released in 2021, this version of 7171 comes with a bonus 7″ of their Four Songs EP which reimagines early FUGAZI tracks. RECOMMENDED!
