The first solo LP on International Anthem for German composer and instrument-maker BEX BURCH explores loose minimal composition & pastoral atmospheres that evoke sounds from labelmates like ALABASTER DePLUME and JEREMIAH CHIU. Recorded largely in Chicago, this features quite a few local luminaries like BEN LAMAR GAY, ROB FRYE, MACIE STEWART and TORTOISE’s DAN BITNEY. Gorgeous work that comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The latest from producer MATTHEW BARNES experiments with sound design that draws from his composition work on film & video games, all tied together with dub & trip-hop beats. Good stuff! RECOMMENDED.

SAVED! is the first LP released under Kristin Hayter’s given name after retiring her LINGUA IGNOTA project in 2022. On paper it seems like a big departure – a gospel record combining traditional Christian hymns with new songs written in the same spirit. But friend, if you drop the needle on this expecting something straightforward you will totally get knocked on your ass. The mood is good & apocalyptic, coursing with fire & brimstone. Songs bleed & warp into each other, often ending abruptly when they get too jaunty. Rev. Hayter’s clarion voice (equal parts SINEAD O’CONNOR and NICK CAVE) is laid bare more than ever, accompanied by piano, guitar, tape hiss & her own demonically multi-tracked vocals… with the occasional disembodied scream thrown in for good measure. This has instantly become one of the strangest, most unhinged records to grace our racks, and we’re grateful for it. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Special edition reissue of this 2015 collab between Chicago rapper/producer JEREMIAH JAE and producer L’ORANGE that’s held up as a modern classic in the years since it dropped. The “noir-hop” tag coined for this project perfectly describes the vibe – cold, raw, and gripping as a late night gangster flick on TCM. Fans of Madvillainy, GANG STARR, BLACKALICIOUS (the late great GIFT OF GAB guests on key track “All I Need”) and MOBB DEEP will find a lot to love here, but as time marches on we’ll be calling back to this one as an influence in the genre, too. This 2023 press has alternate full-color cover art. RECOMMENDED.
