2023 album from this long-running Chicago project which has expanded over time from Brett Sova guitar-and-drum-machine solo recordings to now a full-on power trio lineup with bassist Jeremy Freeze & drummer Josh Johannpeter. Produced way out west with TY SEGALL (whose sun-dried fingerprints are all over this), Blinded by Oblivion is a ripping set of glammy psych-pop that slams its foot on the gas and never lets up. We hear touches of DEVO, GARY NUMAN, BLONDIE and Berlin BOWIE/IGGY, and in its most anthemic & catchy moments these guys even approach the dizzying classic rock heights of RUSH and Eliminator -era ZZ TOP. The chrome sheen is juxtaposed by bright vocal harmonies and provocative lyrics that give the set a big bright neon heart at its center. Absolutely fantastic stuff. RECOMMENDED!

BCMC is an improvisational project from Chicagoans COOPER CRAIN (Bitchin Bajas, Cave) and BILL MacKAY (Ryley Walker, Black Duck). Bill lays down multi-tracked licks, riffs & solos over Cooper’s exploratory organ & synth tones, resulting in a beguiling mix that often leans towards ambient/drone but also incorporates Tuareg desert blues, raga, post-rock and kosmische. As is to be expected from anything these two have their hands in, this LP is first rate, and we’re very much looking forward to more collabs between them in the future. RECOMMENDED!

Wonderful compilation from Melbourne’s HYDROPLANE, a band taken from the remnants of THE CAT’S MIAOW. Where their previous group had focused on concise, minimal jangle-pop, HYDROPLANE’s sound was more expansive, incorporating drone, synth loops, electronic beats and a more distant vocal delivery. This expands the band’s material even further than the Efficient Space comp that came out last year. Fans of MOVIETONE and APRIL MAGAZINE will find a lot to love here. RECOMMENDED!

The talented & very busy harpist Mary Lattimore returns with a new album in 2023. Mary was told by a friend
about a historic hotel in Croatia that was going to be updated for a more modern look, stripping it of its charm. This inspired songs about things that decay, fade away & slip through our fingers as life goes on. She gets help from Meg Baird, Roy Montgomery, SLOWDIVE’s Rachel Goswell & former member of THE CURE Lol Tolhurst. RECOMMENDED!

The second solo album from PARQUET COURTS co-frontman and visual artist ANDREW SAVAGE takes a step back from the COURTS’ dance-punk electronics to focus in on his own style of songwriting that displays taut, jagged guitar rhythms, off-center compositions, emotional & witty lyricism, and (more subtle than on his previous album Thawing Dawn, though no less effective) a feel for dusty western Americana. This stands out as one of the best singer-songwriter records of 2023. On Rough Trade and RECOMMENDED!

SUFJAN STEVENS’ first proper singer-songwriter record since 2020’s stuffed-to-the-gills THE ASCENSION sees the honorary Ilinoisian dialing it back a bit & the result splits the difference between Age of Adz and Carrie & Lowell to great effect. Plus a NEIL YOUNG cover! It’s been cool following Stevens’ jaunts into ballet, classical, instrumental epics, etc. but it’s also good to have him making us cry again. Comes with a 48-page book of art & essays. RECOMMENDED!

Singapore’s SUBSONIC EYE plays raw, energetic jangle pop, with dreamy, bubblegum melodies counterbalanced with vocals that range from gentle harmony to WET LEG- esque sing-speak vocals and nimble, ragged cohesion between rhythm & guitars. Bits of BULLY, ALVVAYS, even some emo in the WEATHERDAY or AMERICAN FOOTBALL vein. RECOMMENDED!

Now a trio, London’s VANISHING TWIN focuses in on a closer “rock” sound compared their predecessor Ookii Gekkou, with their STEREOLAB-esque space age psych grounded by driving motorik rhythms and a heavier emphasis on the bass. RECOMMENDED!

Superb record from the trio of DANIEL VILLARREAL, JEFF PARKER and ANNA BUTTERSS, drawing from the same raw improvisation found on PARKER & BUTTERSS’ Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy but redirected towards VILLARREAL’s Latin rhythmic modes. They play off each other in perfectly intuitive ways, reminding us of other, more candid Int’l Anthem records like MAKAYA McCRAVEN’s Highly Rare and ANTELOPER’s Tour Beats. RECOMMENDED!

A truly remarkable collection of recently discovered electronic recordings from India made between 1969-1972. These composers worked for the first ever electronic music studio in India at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad. Moog & tape experiments & music concrete mixed with some traditional Indian instruments that make for one of the most exciting electronic music compilations in a few years. RECOMMENDED!
