Reckless Records 10/25/24 & 11/1/24 New Releases
BADBADNOTGOOD – Mid Spiral: CHAOS – ORDER – GROWTH LP/CD
Following a series of vocal-infused records and other collaborations, Canadian jazz project BADBADNOTGOOD returns to their instrumental roots on “Mid Spiral”. The sessions here were recorded in early 2024 over a week with a small group of regular collaborators, and originally released as a trio separate EPs – “Chaos”, “Order” and “Growth”. Even more crossover appeal for fans of rock groovers like KHRUANGBIN, GLASS BEAMS, KIT SEBASTIAN and MDOU MOCTAR on these tracks, as well as a good amount of dynamic, emotional soul jazz that the group has made their calling card.
THE CURE – Songs of a Lost World LP/CD/DLX CD (Capitol)
After 16 long years Robert Smith & the band has delivered an instant classic with “Songs of a Lost World.” Many of these songs were played on tour the past few years & we were obsessively listening to live versions of YouTube for months after. Musings on aging & death are the main themes here with plenty of doom, gloom & darkness to go around. Simon Gallup’s incredible bass playing leads most of the songs & Robert’s voice sounds much more youthful that it rightfully should. This album sits nicely next to “Disintegration” & “Pornography” & the long, jammed out intros have a post-rock/Mogwai-esque sound. No doubt one of the best albums of 2024 & one of the best records we’ve heard the past few years to be honest. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE.
SLINT – Tweez 2LP/LP/CD (Touch & Go)
The debut album Louisville legends SLINT has been remastered for its 35th anniversary. Steve Albini’s original mix has always been controversial with its playful post production, something he rarely did & often spoke out against. No matter what you think about that, Tweez is still one of the best debut albums. For basically the entire existence of the album the original bass player Ethan Buckler has basically hated the Albini mix. Included in this expanded reissue is the “Tweethan” mix minus all of Albini’s extra sound FX & MUCH louder bass. To us, this sounds as close to a “Tweez live in the studio” session as you’ll ever get. We think it’s a really fun listen. RECOMMENDED OF COURSE.
