2009 brings this monster 'concept' album from Atlanta's MASTODON. The theme is loosely based on Rasputin, the mystic 'mad monk' that had a major influence on the Russian czar Nicholas II. Legend has it that it took a stabbing, enough poison for 5 men and multiple gun shut wounds to take him down. That seems like an appropriate theme for metal album don't you think? The band has fully embraced their progressive tendencies this time around with 10+ minute songs, lengthy & linear guitar leads & VERY melodic vocals complete with harmonies. Supposedly the band was heavily influenced by YES & early JOURNEY while writing the record. This seems to be the path for popular contemporary metal bands to follow so if bands like TOOL & CYNIC are your cup of tea then you'll love this & don't fear MASTODON fans, there's enough left of their original sound for you in here too.
