DEAL, KIM
NOBODY LOVES YOU MORE (ORANGE VINYL) (INDIE EXCLUSIVE EDITION)
 cover
4AD
We honestly couldn't be more excited for this solo KIM DEAL debut, many years in the making and following THE BREEDERS' 2018 return - as well as their tour support of OLIVIA RODRIGO - both of which thrust DEAL and her bandmates back into the public eye. Some of the oldest recordings here stretch back to 2011, as well as a lot of recordings with STEVE ALBINI at Electrical Audio in 2022. "Nobody Loves You More" is an arresting combo of chamber pop, heartfelt balladry & dub experimentation, all tied together by DEAL's recognizable voice (which doesn't appear to have changed a bit). Featuring help from BREEDERS bandmates KELLEY DEAL and JIM MacPHERSON among others, this comes OBVIOUSLY RECOMMENDED!

PAYSAGE D'HIVER
DIE BERGE (3LP)
 cover
Kunsthall
The Swiss black metal enigma PAYSAGE D'HIVER is back with a bleak new album for these very bleak times. "Die Berge" aka the mountains does a good job of placing you in the center of a harsh Swiss mountainous environment with swirling snow & frigid temps. Ominous & bleak sounding black metal that almost descends into noise at times like being trapped in a swirling blizzard. What else would you want??

SIP
LEOS ULTRAS
 cover
Not Not Fun
Chicago synth wiz Jimmy Lacy is back with a new record under the SIP moniker. Melodic & playful synth pieces with some occasional melodica, flute & other wind instruments & minimal rhythms. Think stuff like Mamman Sani, BITCHIN BAJAS, MIND OVER MIRRORS, HARMONIA etc... RECOMMENDED.

WELCH, GILLIAN & DAVID RAWLINGS
WOODLAND
 cover
Acony
Absolutely stellar 2024 album by one of the most wonderful duos going these days Gillian Welch & David Rawlings. "Woodland" is named after their Nashville studio that was nearly destroyed by a tornado in 2020. Thankfully most of their gear & all of their tapes survived the damaging twister. Their harmonies have always been tear jerking but there's something about hearing them in 2024 with this expanded instrumentation that is just stunning. This is without a doubt one of our favorite albums of the year. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE.

CURE
SONGS OF A LOST WORLD (180g)
 cover
Polydor
After 16 long years Robert Smith & the band has delivered an instant classic with "Songs of a Lost World." Many of these songs were played on tour the past few years & we were obsessively listening to live versions of YouTube for months after. Musings on aging & death are the main themes here with plenty of doom, gloom & darkness to go around. Simon Gallup's incredible bass playing leads most of the songs & Robert's voice sounds much more youthful that it rightfully should. This album sits nicely next to "Disintegration" & "Pornography" & the long, jammed out intros have a post-rock/Mogwai esque sound. No doubt one of the best albums of 2024 & one of the best records we've heard the past few years to be honest. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE.

SINEPHRO, NALA
ENDLESSNESS (2LP, w/ ETCHING)
 cover
Warp
Gorgeous new record from London-based jazz composer NALA SINEPHRO, building up off the hype of 2021's "Space 1.8" (unsurprisingly a favorite of ours here) with a ten-part suite of ambient third-stream. Taking a sense of mantra/motif repetition of early 70s ALICE COLTRANE with the subtley lush dynamics of CLAUS OGERMAN's string arrangement work - or for a recent comparison the dynamics of FLOATING POINTS / PHAROAH SANDERS' "Promises" - SINEPHRO comes through with a meditative & impressionistic collection, again with help from Nubya Garcia and James Mollison as well as BLACK MIDI's Morgan Simpson. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

MIDWIFE
NO DEPRESSION IN HEAVEN ("RED APPLE" VINYL)
 cover
Flenser
Over the past few years the Colorado based musician Madeline Johnston aka MIDWIFE has made some of our favorite records. "No Depression In Heaven" is her 4th album. Madeline is a true master of minimal composition with songs that are mostly just guitar & voice with some occasional drum boxes & synth. Her songs are filled with longing & sadness for people & things that disappear as we live our lives. Songs like "Vanessa", an ode to her dying van or "Killdozer", a song about Marvin Heemeyer getting revenge on the town of Granby, CO. by destroying as much of it with his suped-up bulldozer before committing suicide. There's a great version of the Roland S. Howard song "Autoluminescent" which she really makes her own here. Another amazing album from MIDWIFE. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

STILL HOUSE PLANTS
IF I DON'T MAKE IT I LOVE U (IMP)
 cover
Bison
This is the third album from the London based trio STILL HOUSE PLANTS. Jerky & spastic post-punk/ art rock with some no wave influence. Singer Jess Hickie-Kallenbach has a really unique vocal approach that's difficult to describe. It sort of has a R&B quality to it but also reminds us of Anohni's inflection. Some of the songs are arrhythmic like DIRTY THREE or THIS HEAT. We're really intrigued by this one. RECOMMENDED.

BELONG
REALISTIC IX
 cover
Kranky
It's been 13 long years since the New Orleans duo BELONG released the fantastic "Common Era" album. Michael Jones & Turk Dietrich have now created a new minimalist shoegaze classic with "Realistic IX" via Kranky. Blown out guitars, vocals buried just right & pulsing drum machine beats will make you want to keep coming back to this. There are songs in there somewhere we swear. One of our favorite albums this year for sure. RECOMMENDED.

SECULAR MUSIC GROUP
VOLUME 1
 cover
Love All Day
This is the debut record by the SECULAR MUSIC GROUP courtesy of the Chicago label Love All Day. A nice mix of late 60s/early 70s Blue Note, 60s/70s spiritual jazz & 20th Century classical minimalism. Group member Chistian Ruggiero is a successful composer for film & television so it's not surprise that there are also elements of library music & film scores by the great Quincy Jones & POPOL VUH. RECOMMENDED!
