Back in 2005, Ken Vandermark sought out to start a new group with the focal point being the electric bass with the specific inspiration being JAMES BROWN, the dub sounds of LEE PERRY & even some hip-hop. Nate Mcbride is that bass player & he handles the job well but perhaps the stand-out player here is TORTOISE's JEFF PARKER who shreds mightily in a SONNY SHARROCK meets NELS CLINE meets THURSTON MOORE sort of way that is very appealing. Disc 2 features the original incarnation of the group formed around Mcbride's bass playing & the Scandanavian musicians Ingebrigt Haker Flaten & Lasse Marhaug. This line-up doesn't 'rock-out' quite as much but the improvised electronics & more sparse approach compliment the Chicago disc quite nicely. Did we mention that as always Vandermark leads the group with some of the most intense playing you'll hear from a saxophonist these days.
