SONGS OF A LOST WORLD (180g)
(MARBLE STONE VINYL)
Polydor
After 16 long years Robert Smith & the band has delivered an instant classic with "Songs of a Lost World." Many of these songs were played on tour the past few years & we were obsessively listening to live versions of YouTube for months after. Musings on aging & death are the main themes here with plenty of doom, gloom & darkness to go around. Simon Gallup's incredible bass playing leads most of the songs & Robert's voice sounds much more youthful that it rightfully should. This album sits nicely next to "Disintegration" & "Pornography" & the long, jammed out intros have a post-rock/Mogwai esque sound. No doubt one of the best albums of 2024 & one of the best records we've heard the past few years to be honest. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE.

CZARFACE
EVERY HERO NEEDS A VILLAIN (2LP)
:(BLACK VINYL, NO COMIC)
BRICK
YES YES! Second album from CZARFACE, which is WU-TANG's INSPECTAH DECK alongside 7L & ESOTERIC. This group has taken the concept of their anti-hero/wrestler Czarface to the next level on "Every Hero..." There's a song called "Lumberjack Match," fer chrissakes! Concept aside, this album is another Brick Records winner: funky, funky boom-bap hip-hop with a good sense of humor alongside fresh lyrics & guests like METHOD MAN, LARGE PROFESSOR, MF DOOM, GZA, RA THE RUGGEDMAN & more. If this isn't on several Best of 2015 lists we'll be very confused. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

DEATH BY CHOCOLATE
DEATH BY CHOCOLATE
JETSET
Inspired by 60's psychadelic lounge culture, this debut release from DEATH BY CHOCOLATE travels through the psyched out kitsch of spoken word essays about candy, bleepy lofi synth pop, Mancinni-like party music and general 60's styled go-go dancing backrounds. Angie Tillett, the only voice of the band, uses her teenage Londoner innocence to make what sounds like a homework assignment gone overboard in greatness!!!!!!

DEATH GRIPS
BOTTOMLESS PIT
Harvest
On Bottomless Pit, the fifth album (4th if you count Exmilitary as a mixtape WHICH IT IS) by experimental ear bleeders Death Grips, they choose to obsessively perfect instead of journey into sounds unknown. While for other bands this might spell the beginning of a plateau, this actually works in the trio's favor, making this record their most focused and powerful release yet. If you take the hooks from The Money Store, added in some more of the airy synth work from No Love Deep Web, and mixed them in a weird Andy Warhol-spiced stew broadcast in 4K in Times Square, you'd get something close to this monster of a record. In other words, it's yet another amazing entry in Death Grips' quickly growing discography. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

DECEMBERISTS
CRANE WIFE
CAPITOL
This here is the major label debut from the DECEMBERIST's on CAPITOL. This album starts off with a tender folkey number & segue's into a progressive jam session lasting near the 13 minute mark. "The Crane Wife" is loosely based on a Japanese folk tale that concerns a crane, an arrow, & a beautiful woman. As the album develops one could tie elements of another land & time. A time when all man (or woman) needed was an instrument & open space. Although less diverse, the instrumentation is still accordians & other squeeze-boxes abound; longtime fans will not be disappointed & fans of BELLE & SEBASTIAN, & some of the new folk revival bands should check this out.
