More crunchy power-pop from this Kiwi quartet on their third LP, refining some of the uptempo, early-WEEZER-y parts of "Jump Rope Gazers" with wry singer-songwriter influence in the vein of a PHOEBE BRIDGERS or COURTNEY BARNETT. Excellent stuff on Carpark Records!

Well it's about time. It almost seems redundant at this point to comment on the importance of the two original BIG STAR lps. Most of us know the story at this point. Back in the late 60's, Alex Chilton was a teen pop-star with the BOX TOPS. After quitting that group, he formed BIG STAR with some musician friends from Memphis & made "#1 Record", one of the most underappreciated rock albums of the early 1970's. The other main songwriter in the group, Chris Bell, was so disenchanted with only selling about 500 copies (!!!??) of such a great record that he quit the band. In the 80's, bands like R.E.M. & THE POSIES brought the band back to the world's attention & now as you most of you probably know, "#1 Record" & the follow-up "Radio City" are considered as some of the finest rock/power-pop records ever conceived. "#1 Record" is drenched in British invasion power-pop ala BEATLES & KINKS but what is really so great about the record is how AMERICAN it sounds. Chilton & Bell were both brilliant songwriters & they battle it out throughout the album with great song & after great song. We can't express how excited we are to be able to stock this LP regularly again especially since the reissue is presented by the original label Ardent with faithful reproductions of the original sleeves. They're cheap too. Believe the hype kids, rock n' roll doesn't get much better than this. ESSENTIAL LISTENING.

This joint effort from SIR RICHARD BISHOP and DAVID OLIPHANT is the first in a series of collaborations. SIR RICHARD BISHOP plays guitar throughout, often detuned, bowed or beaten. These sounds are then treated with various software and other sounds. SIR RICHARD BISHOP also deploys field recordings from when he was in India. This mind-altering music is inspired by Tibetan Buddhism and is absolutely stunning. This is quite different from other SIR RICHARD BISHOP releases and is phenomenal.
