NUMERO GROUP branches into New Age territory here the a double-disc reissue of "Gymnosphere: Song of the Rose" composed & performed by JORDAN DE LA SIERRA. De La Sierra was a classically-trained pianist in San Francisco who, in the seventies, started experimenting with "interstellar space piano" under the tutelage of TERRY RILEY. De La Sierra also became entranced by the Indian classical vocalist PANDIT PRAN NATH, who helped guide De La Sierra toward meditative compositions. The importance of both these teachers is obvious in these never-the-less incredibly original compositions. Budget constraints required De La Sierra to record in a tiny underground Berkeley studio that lacked the reflective acoustic components he wanted, so he brought the whole five hours of recordings to the home of the Bay Area's greatest natural acoustics; Grace Cathedral on Nob Hill. Here the tape was played back through speakers & re-recorded, capturing an incredible spacial-sonic experiment. Later mixed down to just under 2 hours, the results are stunning. They were then mostly scrapped; the label cleaved the album down to one LP & refused to print the accompanying 20 page book of art & writings De La Sierra planned for it. The heavy AC/DC influence mixing with their own developing melodic style make this their best album in our humble opinion.

Local rockers DEHD follow up last year's breakthru LP "Water" with another collection of ... shall we say elegantly trashy jangle-pop. "Flower of Devotion" has the band leaning into more detailed and synchopated rhythms that can at times remind us of the B-52's. Other tracks seem to draw from the dusty Americana of early ANGEL OLSEN records. Whichever way you want to slice it, DEHD has taken a step forward in both their writing and production, making this the best release of their young career.
