GLYDERS are a talented trio from Chicago. Their sound is a mix of 60s rock with some hints of 80s new wave & power pop. The songs are tight & crisp with minimal effects & appropriately dead drum sounds. GLYDERS live somewhere in between CRAZY HORSE & TY SEGALL & that works for us. Also, Reckless alum Joe Seeger is behind the kid! RECOMMENDED

ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER – Tranquilizer LP/CD (Warp)

Daniel Lopatin returns to his moniker ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER, following collaborations with THE WEEKND and Josh Safdie on the “Marty Supreme” soundtrack, pulling from an Internet Archive trove of commercial samples for a dense, dynamic exercise in jazz-dance sound design. There’s a sense of cut-n-paste kosmische here that is reminiscent of artists like FLYING LOTUS and KAYTRANADA at their most abstract, and for all of the bombast of its maximalist moments, “Tranquilizer” has periods of muted gentleness that touches on BURIAL- esque hypnagogia. On Warp and RECOMMENDED.

This 2025 album from UK producer DANIEL AVERY blends subterranean dub techno, ambient trip-hop and a touch of shoegaze, evoking contemporaries like KEDR LIVANSKY and KELLY LEE OWENS as well as SEEFEEL, PORTISHEAD and MASSIVE ATTACK.

CINDY LEE – Cat O’ Nine Tails LP (W.25TH)

Back in 2020 this music was originally released in a hyper limited run of 50 lathe-cut LPS & now it’s finally available to the masses. A mix of incidental synth & organ instrumentals & out of time rock & roll ballads that you can imagine blasting out of cheap portable radio somewhere at sunset.RECOMMENDED.

PATRICK COWLEY – Hard Ware LP (Dark Entries)

Dark Entries has slowly been revealing the ridiculously deep treasure trove of unreleased material by the late Patrick Cowley. “Tech-No” is a dark & rich track that would sit well next to any KRAFTWERK klassic. “Jungle Jump” is a dance floor filler & all of this is just more proof of the genius Cowley left behind. Recommended.

DEMIAN – Demian (reissue) LP (Riding Easy)

BUBBLE PUPPY FANS!! After the members of the great 60s texas psych rock band relocated to L.A. they decided to change their name to DEMIAN. They released this excellent album on ABC in 1970 & then faded away. Nods at their BUBBLE PUPPY past, hints of STEPPENWOLF, SUGARLOAF & NAZARETH with some great dueling guitar leads.

Bob Pollard is back with his musical drinking buddies in 2025 with an album that to our ears shows his love for THE WHO. Late 60’s British psychedelia is the name of the game this time around which is more than fine with us. 

ONE OF NINE – Dawn of the Iron Shadow LP/CD (Profound Lore)

ONE OF NINE is a black metal band from North Carolina that is heavily inspired by the JRR TOLKIEN universe. Melodic black metal with some sonic nods at stuff like WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, WINTERFYLLETH etc… with some occasional folky elements. Good stuff. 

RADIOACTIVITY – Time Won’t Bring Me Down LP/CD (Wild Honey)

It’s been 10 long years since the last RADIOACTIVITY album. Jeff Burke (also of MARKED MEN, THE REDS  etc…) is one of the best songwriters in this style & he’s joined by members of MIND SPIDERS & BAD SPORTS for this amazing collection of melodic rockers.

While arranging music for the Hamlet Hail to the Thief Shakespeare adaptation Thom Yorke went back & listened to some live recordings from the era & was so impressed the band decided to release them & we’re thankful for it. The band was absolutely COOKING in the oughts & these live recordings prove it. This is probably the band’s most underrated album in our humble opinion so this live album is much appreciated. RECOMMENDED!

BLACKBRAID is the solo black metal project of Jon Krieger, an indigenous musician from the Adirondack Mountains in New York. This native Mexican musician also goes by Sgahgahsowh a Mohawk name that means the Witch Hawk! Incredible melodic black metal with plenty of crisp acoustic passages & sounds of crackling fires. This reminds us of everything from DISSECTION (not a comparison we throw around lightly) & other melodic greats like WINTERFYLLETH. This third album shows BLACKBRAID growing into one of the finest active black metal bands around. The sold out 2025 tour is coming through Chicago! RECOMMENDED.

One of our all-time favorite artists has returned with a new album in 2025. As Always Neko’s voice is bigger than life, filling every bit of space possible in the most beautifulways. The biggest change this time comes from Tom Hagerman of  DeVotchKa who helped arrange the lush strings that dominate most of the songs which all blends with Neko’s voice wonderfully. Another amazing addition to her deep discography.

We’ve recently become obsessed by the California based musician Joshua Chuquimia Crampton’s solo guitar music. There’s tons of distortion and what we think is an octave pedal totally cranked. We suppose you could say there are “riffs” but it doesn’t really listen that way. Fans of early 00s noise & drone like stuff on labels such as Important, Root Strata & even 90s noise like DEAD C will want to check this RECOMMENDED.

CATE LE BON – Michelangelo Dying LP/CD (Mexican Summer) with signed print while supplies last! 

The Welsh musician Cate Le Bon has made some of the most captivating albums of the last decade not only as a musician but as a producer. Her 2025 album finds her at the top of the heap of modern art rock. Brian Eno’s pop records have been a major comparison on the last few & that continues here along with nods at 80s Bowie, TALKING HEADS, DURUTTI COLUMN & YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA. Easily one of the best albums of the year. RECOMMENDED.

Midwife started in Denver about a decade ago & her brand of ghostly shoegaze/slow core is a store favorite. The London trio MOIN is one of our favorite contemporary groups here at Reckless. Drummer Valentina Magaletti is always at the center of the music & that’s no different here. This EP is less “rock” than “You Never End” with cyclical sax loops instead of prominent guitars & the staple MOIN spoken word vocals & samples. Fans of the group, THIS HEAT etc… must hear this. RECOMMENDED.

Chicago’s own SMUT are back with a new one & a new line-up for 2025. This one feels a little more aggressive with crunchier guitars & a more blown-out sound. Singer Tay Roebuck’s voice cuts through the fuzzy wall of guitars (one of which happens to be Reckless’ Andie Min!) & their catchy tunes remind us of THE SUNDAY, SMASHING PUMPKINS, PRIMITIVES & ELASTICA. Following their 2024 album with the late, great ARIEL KALMA, this latest collaboration between synthesist JEREMIAH CHIU and violist / electronic composer MARTA SOFIA HONER returns to placid, meditative vignettes that develop motifs and phase in and out of structure. Featuring support from JEFF PARKER and CHIU’s SML bandmate JOSH JOHNSON, this will definitely appeal to fans of minimal jazz artists like NALA SINEPHRO and ALABASTER DePLUME as well as environmental composers like HIROSHI YOSHIMURA. On Int’l Anthem and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

THE CURE are one of our all-time favorite bands here at Reckless & their 2024 comeback album “Songs of a Lost World” was one of the best records of 2024. The deep remix album features reimaginings by artists such as MOGWAI, FOURTET, PAUL OAKENFOLD, ORBITAL & much more. A really fun listen.

HOTLINE TNT – Raspberry Moon LP/CD (Third Man) limited color or black

We were really big fans of the debut album by HOTLINE TNT “Cartwheel” & this 2025 album is already bouncing around in our heads. Will Anderson is the primary songwriter & up until this album HOTLINE TNT has mostly been a solo project in the studio. “Raspberry Moon” is a full band record including live drums this time. Warm & crunchy guitars & straight-to-the-point shoegaze rockers that will appeal to fans of RIDE, DIIV, PALE SAINTS& DINOSAUR JR. 

BILLY NICHOLS – Would You Believe LP (Immediate)

Here it is kiddies, one of the rarest & most expensive LPs out there finally gets a worldwide release for the very first time in nearly 60 years. The album was recorded by the manager of the Rolling Stones Andrew Loog Oldham for his label Immediate & he brought in singer/songwriter Billy Nichols to help make a British response to “Pet Sounds.” The album featured SMALL FACES & Zep’s John Paul Jones & the baroque just drips off these psychedelic pop gems. About 100 copies were pressed but the label fell on hard times almost immediately (cough) after & was more or less cancelled. It’s become a cult classic over the years & any BEATLES obsessive, KINKS, LEFT BANKE, ZOMBIES fan needs to have this in their collection. ESSENTIAL late 60s’ British psych pop. 

COSEY FANNI TUTTI – 2T2 LP/CD (CTI)

Cosey Fanni Tutti has released a colossal amount of music but 2T2 is just her 3rd proper solo album. The songs are repetitive with almost wordless chanting at times over fuzzed-out synths & mid-tempo beats while “Never the Same” sounds like a classic CHRIS & COSEY track. Another great record by one of our favorite artists.

It’s hard to really articulate how important and vital this record is, but here’s an attempt: These 11 songs represent the meeting point between punk, dance, funk, disco & hip-hop. Minimal bass hooks on the back beat are paired with whip-sharp drums, and the resulting sound is deceptive in its simplicity. This record is a hallmark of the post-Studio 54 era NY disco scene. Endlessly sample-able, this should be mandated in every home.

ESG – Step Off LP (Fire)

 2025 reissue of the great 2002 comeback record by the legendary ESG. The band continued their minimalist take on dance music that they started in the late 70’s in the South Bronx. There’s maybe a bit more of a minor key on some of these tunes but it’s DEFINITELY the ESG we know & love. RECOMMENDED.

Thom Wasluck is back with the first new PLANNING FOR BURIAL album in 8 years. Genres are mostly out the window here with elements of doom, black metal, shoegaze & slow core combined in really cool ways. Fans of stuff like JESU, PELICAN, NADJA etc… will dig this.

ALAN SPARHAWK WITH TRAMPLED BY TURTLES – With Trampled By Turtles LP/CD (Sub Pop)

Alan Sparhawk & fellow Duluth musicians TRAMPLED BY TURTLES have played together many times over the years so this combo is no surprise. Sparhawk’s last record was fully entrenched in electronica & this record couldn’t be more different despite sharing some of the same songs. The recording is direct & dry with Alan’s vocals as up front as they can be. Tracks like “Not Broken” were written with the late Mimi Parker & the late Mimi Parker & the reminder of LOW here is quite heavy. A nice mix of folk & 70s style orchestral pop ala John Cale & Lou Reed solo albums.RECOMMENDED.

STEREOLAB – Instant Holograms on Metal Film LP/CD (Duophonic) color or black vinyl

It’s safe to say that STEREOLAB is one of our favorite bands ever here at Reckless – spend a day at any of the locations and there’s at least a ~40% chance you hear “Dots & Loops”, “Transient Random-Noise Bursts..” or any of their other records over our speakers (don’t check my math on that) – so it’s understandable how excited we are about their first new music in fifteen years. If you’re familiar with the band, “Instant Holograms..” is not going to shock you. Gane, Sadier & company settle into their signature cerebral mixture that combines retro space-age lounge, pulsing motorik grooves, nostalgic French ye-ye and enveloping noise rock. There are some Chicago connections here too; the record is produced by Cooper Crain of BITCHIN’ BAJAS and features help from Crain’s bandmate Rob Frye as well as Int’l Anthem staple Ben Lamar Gay, but their contributions only reinforce how singularly STEREOLAB this record sounds. COULD NOT BE MORE RECOMMENDED!!!!

The much anticipated physical release of the great 2022 album “Preacher’s Daughter” by Ethel Cain is finally here! This record has become quite the cult classic thanks to the internet & it seems like the legend is only growing. Ethel Cain is the stage name of the musician & model Hayden Silas Anhedönia & her songs about her religious upbringing in the Florida Bible Belt have people all over the internet digging into the meaning of her lyrics. Imagine a mix of Lana Del Rey, Sharon Van Etten & ambient rock artists like MIDWIFE. An instant classic.

CAR SEAT HEADREST – Scholars LP/CD (Matador)

No stranger to ambition, Will Toledo gets grand with a double-LP rock opera, based around the rather esoteric narrative of an obscure Spanish poem from a priest, reframing the stories of spiritual crises to a college campus. Eschewing the lo-fi sound of albums like “Twin Fantasy” and “Teens of Style / Denial”, Toledo goes for a larger, more polished production that blends nimble guitars, bright synthesizers, and a shifting sense of dynamics. This ain’t your same old CSH, but a dense, ambitious project like this should reward even on repeated listens. 

JENNY HVAL – Iris Silver Mist LP/CD (4AD) indie only color or black

The ninth album for Norwegian art-pop purveyor JENNY HVAL is a tactile experience, incorporating everyday sound design into minimalis electro-pop tracks that are reminiscent of BJORK, FEVER RAY or even early LAURIE ANDERSON. This LP contains some of HVAL’s most accessible work to date. Excellent stuff! 

LOSCIL – Lake Fire LP/CD (Kranky)

Vancouver’s Scott Morgan returns with a new LOSCIL album for 2025. Inspired by the recent wildfires that have been ravaging the West Coast the past few years, “Lake Fire” is another masterpiece of modern drone/ ambient. Morgan’s music rarely uses beats but there are buried cyclical rhythms similar to the mysterious techno realms of GAS. Another great one from Loscil.

PINK FLOYD – At Pompeii MCMLXXII LP/CD/DVD/BLU-RAY (Pink Floyd)

Floyd fans have been daydreaming about a legit release of this soundtrack for over 50 years & it was worth the wait. This was remixed by the Floyd obsessive Steven Wilson & the result is just as magical as the remastered film. The band were at the top of their improvisational game here & knowing that they were on their way to making Dark Side…makes this even more mythic. STUNNING.

MARK PRITCHARD & THOM YORKE – Tall Tales LP/DLX LP/CD (Warp)

Thom Yorke & the electronic musician Mark Pritchard have teamed up for this dark & interesting 2025 album “Tall Tales.” Unlike Yorke’s recent experimental rock project with Jonny Greenwood in THE SMILE, “Tall Tales” is a fully electronic project. This is a record that it seems like Yorke has been hinting at for years & he’s finally done it. There’s a menacing quality to the songs & the songs are really allowed to stretch out & breathe. Fans of Thom’s more electronic side will really dig this.
