Sophomore record from Durham, NC’s ANJIMILE CHITHAMBO, shifting to darker territory from his debut to focus on his experience as a Black trans person in America with an ultimate feeling of uplift, delivered mostly in a stark combo of acoustic guitar and voice. RECOMMENDED!

This Matador debut from London’s BAR ITALIA evokes the 90s underground in its shoegaze-y moodiness, snarling guitar fuzz choruses and cut-and-paste sample work, all drenched in atmospheric reverb. Like hearing THE STONE ROSES in the murky shadows of SLOWDIVE or BLONDE REDHEAD. Superb stuff that comes RECOMMENDED.

This soundtrack is an atypical release for BARNETT, comprised of seventeen short, improvised instrumentals that make use of empty space and ambient textures from her guitar. Certainly in the tradition of NEIL YOUNG’s Dead Man score, but with a lighter touch closer to RYLEY WALKER and SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE. RECOMMENDED!

THE CARETAKER aka JAMES KIRBY is an exquisite, ghostly journey, transporting the listener to another time, another place, another dream via old vinyl ala PHILLIP JECK. This album is truly remarkable and evokes an old-world nostalgia like few other modern releases. Astonishing and RECOMMENDED.

Chicago’s own DEEPER drop their third LP and first on the mighty Sub Pop. This time out they brighten their post-punk/darkwave stylings with swaths of new wave color & art-pop drama a la prime PSYCHEDELIC FURS, TELEVISION, and THE CARS. If they continue down this path they might just have a Disintegration or Violator -level crossover down the line. You can take that to the bank. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

>> ALABASTER DePLUME – Come With Fierce Grace LP/CD (International Anthem)

After this third album in four years on Int’l Anthem, it can be safe to describe ALABASTER DePLUME’s output as “consistently excellent”. The music on Come With Fierce Grace showcases the best of DePLUME’s minimal third stream jazz composition, accentuated with vocal mantra melodies that embrace the sounds of gospel and folk, particularly in the folk-based classical music of artists ranging from MOONDOG to BELA BARTÓK. Don’t sleep on this one! RECOMMENDED.

Stop-gap EP between albums from man of the hour ZACH BRYAN. We hear obvious country touchstones like TOWNES and PRINE (as well as Zach’s peers JASON ISBELL and TYLER CHILDERS), but there’s also a little BRUCE, some WESTERBERG, and at key moments even some golden age of confessional emo influence a la BRIGHT EYES and DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL. We’re really looking forward to whatever’s coming down the pike next for this dude… RECOMMENDED!

EARL continues his march towards Legend status with this 2022 masterpiece. The production (much of it handled by Earl himself with key contributions from BLACK NOI$E, THE ALCHEMIST and others) is still dense & unpredictable as all hell, and yet Earl’s barbs are more cutting than ever, slicing like a hammer through the crackle & pop. This might be the coldest he’s ever sounded on record, with a laser-focused clarity maybe brought on by age, loss, getting through the pandemic by the skin of his teeth, or all of the above. We’ve been there. We get it… and we say this is HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The first ever vinyl reissue for Haruomi Hosono’s 1995 album N.D.E. is here courtesy of Rush Hour. Featuring collaborators such as YASUAKI SHIMIZU, BILL LASWELL & house legend FRANCOIS K, this album is a heady mix of techno, dub & VERY forward thinking electronic music. In many ways this reminds us of MANUEL GÖTTSCHING’s E2-E4 with Hosono’s attention to detail & crisp & clean production aesthetic. HEADPHONES RECOMMENDED.

The Philadelphia band HORRENDOUS returns with their 5th album & it’s not too often a band makes such a creative leap forward this deep into their discography. This album is packed with ideas & top-notch playing & they effortlessly experiment with non-death metal genres throughout the entire record. The closest comparison we can think of is BLOOD INCANTATION’s Hidden History of the Human Race but this album is more progressive & even veers into IRON MAIDEN & RUSH territory, not kidding. This is easily one of our favorite records or 2023. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Power-pop-punk (and -ska!) savant JEFF ROSENSTOCK drops another banger, his third on Polyvinyl. Never fear – Jeff’s still raging against the dying of the light with his high-BPM anthems, but those numbers are tempered this time by heaping teaspoons of acoustic guitar and even some spare folk songs. To put it to you in punk parlance – Hellmode is Jeff’s Nimrod. Real good stuff as always. RECOMMENDED!

Everything Is Alive is the sophomore album from SLOWDIVE’s incredibly successful 2nd phase. Their 2017 comeback was more present & less “shoegazey” than their original albums & this one follows in those footsteps though they’ve added more synth textures & acoustic guitars this time around. Neil Halstead & Rachel Goswell share vocal duties almost equally & as always they compliment each other perfectly. Overall we’d say this album is more quiet & dreamy than the last one & there’s even a MOGWAI-esque instrumental boldly placed 2nd in the album sequence. SLOWDIVE
is an all-time Reckless fave so we’re quite excited about this one. RECOMMENDED!

The fourth record for Sadie Dupuis & co is their first in over five years, but with Dupuis staying busy on side projects, the resumption of SPEEDY ORTIZ goes on without a hitch. Punchy, glimmering power pop with its share of bubblegum melodies and earworm guitar hooks. RECOMMENDED!

Hard to believe it’s been five years since we last heard from Richard D. James aka APHEX TWIN, but Blackbox Life… picks up right where Collapse left off, with dry, bouncing analog-ish drum textures and playful pacing counter-balancing dark, ruminative synth tones. There are also nods to his early days, with rave-y stabs and burbling acid basslines. Classic and yet also entirely new stuff from RDJ. OBVIOUSLY RECOMMENDED!

2023 record from Reckless faves THE CLIENTELE messes a bit with the formula, eschewing their signature drum/bass/jangle for breakbeats, tape machine samples & hybrid textures that incorporate strings, organ, horns
and Mellotron. It’s not a complete change – there’s plenty of 60s inspired earworm pop tunes, and Alasdair MacLean’s voice is recognizably hazy & breathy – but the new sonic palette allows the hour-plus length to breeze by. Great stuff yet again. RECOMMENDED!

Natural Disaster is the first-ever solo record from BETHANY COSENTINO (dropping while BEST COAST are on hiatus). BC’s unabashed love for the pop craftsmanship of FLEETWOOD MAC and THE GO-GOs has always been hard to hide under even the thickest layers of fuzz, but she takes it one step further here with the glossy, sun-soaked sheen of peak SHERYL CROW, SHANIA TWAIN, MICHELLE BRANCH, and that self-titled LIZ PHAIR that keeps sounding better and better as time goes on. Some of these tunes are already destined to become “Indie Rock Summer Jam” playlist staples. Now we just need that Bobb Bruno black metal record… This is RECOMMENDED!

While DAMON LOCKS & ROB MAZUREK have collaborated in the past with EXPLODING STAR ORCHESTRA, this marks the first pure duo record for the two. The 18 tracks on New Future City Radio function together as a mixtape imagining a future utopian pirate radio program that blends improvisational jazz, hip-hop, electric beats & psychedelia with ruminations on the future of community, all tied together with LOCKS’ retrofuturist voiceover. Excellent and RECOMMENDED!

First physical version of this 2016 album from South Korean psych experimentalists MID-AIR THIEF. There’s a stronger folk influence to this, but with some dubby electronics that helps these chameleonic songs shift from one style to another with grace. Fans of FISHMANS, THE FLAMING LIPS, or some of the collage-like records by THE BOOKS will find a ton of stuff to love here. An excellent record that we’re happy to have tangibly in stock. For anybody still pining for the heyday of Britpop, it’s gotta be a thrill to see the classic BLUR logo on a new LP in 2023. We’re excited to say this one lives up to that promise & then some. Dropping 8 years after their comeback The Magic Whip (which was v. good but mostly just had a “Thanks for your patience, here’s more Blur” vibe), The Ballad of Darren finds the lads sounding more charged since they have since pre-GORILLAZ. The uptempo numbers have a post-punk energy that suggests inspo from recent contemporaries like IDLES & FONTAINES DC, and the more mellow cuts are elegiac & wistful (a la recent ARCTIC MONKEYS), making the whole affair feel like a graceful comedown from those glory days as they again carve out a space for themselves in today’s scene. You can finally pull that thrashed copy Parklife from your disc-changer – this’ll do the trick just fine. RECOMMENDED!

The 18th release in the Jazz is Dead series focuses on some increbile sessions featuring the late, legendary Afrobeat drummer TONY ALLEN. The unmistakable patterns of ALLEN’s drumming had been used quite well working with techno pioneer JEFF MILLS, but these sessions are far less electronic, emphasizing the lush, big-band brass and polyrhythmic funk of FELA KUTI and AFRICA 70. Originally released in 1970 in a pressing of just 250 copies that were distributed to CBC radio, this debut album by Beverly Glenn-Copeland (then Beverly Copeland) is finally available again. With some similarities to fellow Canadian Joni Mitchell & other folkies like Odetta & Buffy Sainte-Marie, Copeland’s debut is remarkably strong & still sounds unique & interesting so many years later. RECOMMENDED!

The result is a quintessentially “English” album, moored in narrative concept the same way as RICHARD DAWSON but with the sonic sensibilites of JOSEPHINE FOSTER and a Byron/Keats-esque sense of poetry.
