Reckless Records 12/16/22 New Releases

JID – The Forever Story

RECKLESS RECORDS 12/16/22 NEW RELEASES

>> JID – The Forever Story 2LP (Dreamville) *One of Reckless’ Best of 2022 finally available on vinyl!

Sophomore full length from Atlanta MC J.I.D. is a statement on family & artistic musicianship. The heart of The Forever Story is J.I.D. & his desire to make something more musical & expansive. There are beat changes on a number of tracks, & new flows & rhyme schemes all over the record. Also worth mentioning is the effort & work shown in Jiddy’s singing voice which really on display here. J.I.D. is one of the most interesting & talented rappers at work today & these are some of his best… RECOMMENDED!

>> JOHN McGUIRE – Pulse Music 2LP (Unseen Worlds)

Late 70’s recordings by John McGuire, a composer that studied with Stockhausen & Penderecki in Europe. Beautiful & rhythmic electronic pulses that vary in speed over the course of the pieces. Imagine Steve Reich’s compositions run through some 70s computer software & you might be able to imagine what this sounds like. RECOMMENDED!

>> MOTRIK – Artificial Head LP (Jealous Butcher) *Ltd. Green Vinyl

Nice physical edition of this 2020 album from Portland neo-psych band MOTRIK. With a name like that you know what sort of rhythms to expect. Think MINAMI DEUTSCH, GOAT, the chiller side of the OSEES and of course NEU. RECOMMENDED!

>> PANDA BEAR – Person Pitch 2LP (Domino) *2022 Reissue

NICE. Domino blesses us with a repress of PANDA BEAR’s magnum opus, still as fresh as ever 15 years later. Here’s what we had to say about it when it came out back in 2007: NOAH LENNOX (of ANIMAL COLLECTIVE fame) returns with his third solo release. This album replaces some of the acoustic elements of previous albums and introduces some samplers & electronics. Full of texture & synthesized sounds this album is a playful addition to LENNOX’s busy arrangements. An album that would surely make BRIAN WILSON proud, as it is non-stop, beautiful vocal harmonies. No lush/orchestral pop fan should be without this one! HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

>> VARIOUS – Síntesis Moderna: An Alternative Vision of Argentinean Music 3LP (Soundway)

The latest Soundway compilation follows down the path of Doing it in Lagos and Ritmo Fantasia, focusing on synth-pop, boogie and early house from Argentina. Beautiful balearic grooves across the ocean that go in enjoyable directions. Compiled by Ric Piccolo & Ariel Harari and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

NEW MUSIC

Lots of music I enjoyed this year. I tried to narrow it to fifteen releases but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

HIRO AMA – Animal Emotions (PRAH)

  • Jazzy, organic, not really meant for the dancefloor; this is moreso “morning coffee house music”.

BIG THIEF – Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You Boycott Divestment Sanctions That’s My Grandma (4AD)

  • Yes the Tel Aviv show/Instagram defense debacle was a disappointment but the record is undeniable. Adrianne Lenker is probably indie rock’s  best melody songwriter, and the band navigates the tight-loose spectrum masterfully. As Roland Barthes once said, “Nobody’s perfect.”

JEREMIAH CHIU & MARIA SOFIA HONER – Recordings from the Åland Islands (International Anthem)

  • Even as a fan of ambient music I have limited patience for music that emphasizes ~field recordings~. I endorse this album as an exception that proves the rule.

EMISSIVE – City of Rooms (Telephone Explosion)

  • When they talk about “liquid” synth sounds, this is what they mean.

FELBM – Elements of Nature (Soundway)

  • I don’t know if it’s better or worse that the artist’s name came from a faulty auto-correct. Regardless, this album scratched the classical minimalism itch. Like children’s music from a place that doesn’t exist.

HORSE LORDS – Comradely Objects (RVNG Intl.)

  • Turning a big dial that says “Dissonance” on it and constantly looking back at the audience for approval like a contestant on The Price is Right

TIM JACKIW – Sunset Over Saturn (Offworld)

  • Timmy J understands that the best dance music is incredibly corny. “Full Moon” is Song of the Year.

NU GENEA – Bar Mediterraneo (NG)

  • Everytime I listen to Khruangbin, I’m a little disappointed they don’t sound more like this record.

PHOTAY & CARLOS NIÑO – An Offering (International Anthem)

  • Another Int’l Anthem ambient record, and this one is a bit more “cosmic new age”. If not for luck and circumstance I feel as though I’d have been more susceptible than most to the influence of a charismatic midcentury guru.

PRATHLOONS – The Kansas Wind (Septic Jukebox)

  • Forget what I said about “Full Moon”. “Chagrin” is Song of the Year.

DAWN RICHARD & SPENCER ZAHN – Pigments (Merge)

  • I was kinda iffy on Second Line, but I absolutely loved this one. More music should embrace a misty, extraterrestrial atmosphere.

GEORGE RILEY – Running in Waves (PLZ Make It Ruins)

  • This plus her drum-n-bass mix Interest Rates, A Tape make her the official 2022 Heatseeker of the Year.

SESSA – Estrela Acesa (Mexican Summer)

  • New bossa nova/MPB that’s neither too loungy nor too indebted to the past. Perfect music for staring longingly into the eyes of your lover.

SOICHI TERADA – Asakusa Light (Rush Hour)

  • Terada is a master. Some of the brightest, most purely enjoyable music I heard all year.

ELI WINTER – Eli Winter (Three Lobed)

  • I’m an absolute sucker for pretty acoustic guitar, and this does a great job of striking a balance between pastoral Daniel Hecht-sounding stuff and more knotty Gastr del Sol-ish stuff (which makes sense with David Grubbs making an appearance)

COMPILATIONS & REISSUES

TIA BLAKE & HER FOLK-GROUP – Folksongs & Ballads (Ici Bientôt)
PATRICK COWLEY – Malebox (Dark Entries)
WILLIAM DOYLE – The Dream Derealised / Lightnesses I & II / Near Future Residence (Tough Love)

2022 YEAR OF POP SONGS
sorry for typos i just love albums so much!!!!

Always – Blue Rev (Polyvinyl) / what dyou say? i think this record owns. so does everybody else. big whoop.

Emperor X – The Lakes of Zone B & C / another gotta-hear-it-to-believe-it banger from our man in berlin. EX makes everybody else singing about politics look like Bono promoting his book at Davos. now with more piano ballads & we love to see it

Soichi Terada – Asakusa Light (Rush Hour) / consummate perfection. i rung in my 30th birthday on an airplane to LA, listening to this album and drinking a tiny airplane bottle of vodka. doesnt get better than that

Mister Goblin – Bunny / mr goblin does the hard work of being in indiana so you don’t have to. no working songwriter understands america as well and even if they did they wouldn’t have the tunes, the riffs, the extended harmony, the lapel-grapping guts. Damn

Smut – How the Light Felt (Bayonet) / year of pop songs. “after silver leaves”? 10/10 italian_chef_kiss.jpg

Friendship – Love the Stranger (Merge) / yknow how you keep saying you’re going to make it out to the beach this summer but then it’s october all of a sudden, year after year after–? uh oh. dont cry buddy. be cool. youre in a store

Oren Ambarchi – Shebang (Drag City) / dope that this record seemed to break through to the p4k set a little. reminds me of watching a rainstorm start to happen. incredible

1975 – Being Funny in a Foreign Language / why is this bull shit on here? am i doing a bit? is this band actually good or do they suck ass? is the pastiche hilarious or irritating? i truly dont know folx. all i know is if you are reading this AND you like this band YOU MUST GO LISTEN TO THE BLUE NILE & PREFAB SPROUT. thats a direct order from your superior officer

Ex-Void – Bigger than Before (Don Giovanni) / like i said: year of pop songs

special categories ——-

THE MAHLER 3 AWARD FOR EXTRAORDINARY LENGTH
Richard Dawson – the Ruby Cord / I will probably only ever listen to this twice but holy hell it’s wild, disquieting, etc. if you know you know

THE SAM BANKMAN-FRIED AWARD FOR CONFLICT OF INTEREST
Prathloons – The Kansas Wind / Yes ….these are my “buds” But Also this album whips. midwest slow cigarette vibe is back and its better than ever. clarinets? They’re Back Too. thank you for your compliance with this aesthetic

THE BETHS AWARD FOR BEST BETHS ALBUM OF THE YEAR
the Beths — Expert in a Dying Field (carpark)

THE “DO YOU HAVE FRANK OCEAN VINYL” AWARDS FOR RECORDS WE DO NOT HAVE IN OUR STORE

The World Without Parking Lots – You’ll Have To Take My Word For It / lovely (and, i believe, local?) wintertime singer-songwriter record, really genuinely clever and moving tunes

Shinichi Atobe – Love of Plastic (DDS) / bobbing my head til it falls off

Bats – Blue Cabinet

MUST GRIP REISSUED / ARCHIVAL STUFF:
Tall Dwarfs — Unravelled ’81-’02 (Merge)
Charles Stepney — Step on Step (Int’l Anthem)
Hypnotic Guitar of John Ondalo (Mississippi)
Go Sailor – s/t reissue (Slumberland)

fav songs:
Big Thief – “Little Things” – in the end the LP didnt work for me (take no pleasure in reporting this etc etc) but this is one of the best songs i’ve ever heard
Caroline No – “Anna’s on the Radio” from s/t album (Grapefruit)
Empath – “Born 100 Times” from Visitor (Fat Possum)
song of da year: “Freeway in Heaven” by Emperor X i think

a few notable shows:
Stereolab + Fievel Is Glauque @ the riv. listen to fievel is glauque!!!!!
Emperor X @ mustache
The Chills @ sleeping village
friendship / tenci / advance base @ hideout
beth orton @ irish american community center

________

<< STEVEN RAHMAN >>

2022 has been the longest year of my life & these were the records I caught that I wanted to recommend to other people in no particular order…

  • Gianni Brezzo “Tutto Passa” – There’s something so amazingly relaxing about this record. It’s the sonic equivalent of a Hot Toddy. It’s warm, & comforting, & sophisticated. The feeling of a new favorite place; something you discovered by chance but feels like home…
  • Saba “Few Good Things” – There aren’t many MCs who can channel nostalgia the way that Saba can. On Few Good Things, we get to see Saba challenge, change, & interrogate the ways his success has interacted with the tragedies he & his have experienced over the last few years… The productions here are always soulful, with deep harmonies & even on the hardest songs here, the grooves are creative & enveloping.
  • Danger Mouse & Black Thought “Cheat Codes” – I’ll admit at first, I was a little disappointed that this record wasn’t the Tariq Trotter show. This is the closest thing we’ve ever gotten to a solo full-length from the Roots front man & I was kinda hoping for an hour of Black Thought rapping over straight breakbeats… But this is a collaboration, & the beats that Danger Mouse provides are perfect reminders that Thought can rap over ANYTHING! The rhymes are on point, & the guests are amazing, & it might not be the album I was waiting for, but it is everything I wanted.
  • J.I.D. “Forever Story” – J.I.D. is a Musician. The Rapper/ Singer is on a mission to make sure you know it. Opening the record with a recorded count-in & bringing a beat switch to almost every track on the record, the record is consistently displaying the care taken to make a piece of art that will stand the test of time… Also… Jiddy can RAP. Non-stop flows, metaphors, similes, imagery, rhymes… magnificent.
  • The Plosivs “Plosivs” – There’s not a whole lot to say about this album. It’s just good. Swami John Reis (Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, RftC), & Rob Crow (Pinback) got together with some friends & wrote some rocking, guitar heavy songs & recorded them. 33 minutes of fast, powerful, Pop songs, heavy on the melody, with driving propulsive Rock n’ Roll attitude.
  • Ogi “Monologues EP”
  • Open Mike Eagle “Component System With the Auto Reverse”
  • Umi “Forest in the City”
  • Lucky Daye “Candy Drip”
  • Dezron Douglas “Atalaya”
  • Samm Henshaw “Untidy Soul”
  • Vic Spenser & Small Pro “Mudslide”
  • Earthgang “Ghetto Gods”
  • Cecile Mclorin Salvant “Ghost Song”
  • Smut “How the Light Felt”

Reckless Records 12/9/22 New Releases

Dead Meadow – Force Form Free

RECKLESS RECORDS 12/9/22 NEW RELEASES

>> DEAD MEADOW – Force Form Free LP/CD (Blues Funeral)

DEAD MEADOW returns!! There was a few years where these guys were on a serious tear. They’ve been on hiatus for a bit but we’re really glad they’re back. They’ve changed things up a little, going for  more of an expansive, psychedelic doom instrumental trip. You have to wait until track 4 forthe vocals to finally arrive & it’s a pretty mellow track, reminding us more of Jason Simon’s solo stuff. Fans of their previous records might be surprised by the lack of vocals but overall this still has a DEAD MEADOW vibe. RECOMMENDED.

>> LELAND WHITTY (of BADBADNOTGOOD) – Anyhow LP (Innovative Leisure)

This solo record from BADBADNOTGOOD’s LELAND WHITTY makes good use of his Swiss Army Knife-like abilities
on guitar, sythnesizer, woodwinds & strings, allowing for a totalizing compositional approach in the vein of DAVID AXELROD and ARTHUR VEROCAI. Lush, textured and layered, this is perfect for fans of BBNG, 70s HERBIE HANCOCK and the groovier side of the label International Anthem. RECOMMENDED!

>> WILD NOTHING – Nocturne: 10th Anniversary Edition LP (Captured Tracks)

10th anniversary edition of the fantastic 2nd record by Jack Tatum’s WILD NOTHING now on marble vinyl with new artwork. This is one of the finest moments for the band & the record has aged very well. Top-notch dream pop for fans of the early days of CAPTURED TRACKS, 80s Flying Nun bands etc…RECOMMENDED!

>> VARIOUS – Artificial Intelligence LP (Warp) *30th Anniversary – Remastered

Warp is closing out 2022 with a new remaster of their landmark 1992 compilation, featuring early cuts from APHEX TWIN (as THE DICE MAN), RICHIE HAWTIN (as UP!) and AUTECHRE amongst other Warp staples. History on wax here! RECOMMENDED!

>> VARIOUS – Padang Moonrise: The Birth of the Modern Indonesian Recording Industry 2LP (Soundway) *w/ bonus 7″

Excellent compilation from Soundway detailing music from Indonesia during the middle of the 20th century, a period of extreme political violence that also saw the simultaneous emergence of a recording industry. The music here draws from both Western styles of jazz, afro-latin music, lounge and doo-wop as well as styles from the regions such as Gamelan, Gambus and Kroncong. For fans of Ethiopiques and South East Asian “nuggets” compilations, this comes RECOMMENDED.

Reckless Records 11/25 & 12/2/22 New Releases

Ganser – Nothing You Do Matters EP

RECKLESS RECORDS 11/25 & 12/2/22 NEW RELEASES

>> MABE FRATTI – Se Ve Desde Aqui LP (Unheard of Hope)

For her third album, Mexico City-based cellist MABE FRATTI spaces things out, detangling the textures and loops that defined her earlier releases to something more stark and sparse. Se Ve Desde Aqui embraces these open landscapes, fusing acoustic free jazz with ambient pop and minimal wave, finding these songs in a style not unlike ARTHUR RUSSELL’s World of Echo or contemporary minimal artists like FENNESZ and Chicago composer GIA MARGARET. Absolutely RECCOMENDED!

>> FRET – BECAUSE OF THE WEAK 2LP (L.I.E.S.) *MICK HARRIS (of NAPALM DEATH, LULL, SCORN)

Long-awaited full length release from legendary drummer/ producer MICK HARRIS out via LIES records. BECAUSE OF THE WEEK is 10 tracks of crushing, black hole industrial techno. An unrelenting onslaught of beat-down mutations mixed with Mick’s dub sensibilities, bringing texture and deepatmosphere to the album. An incredibly solid release for those who like it on the extreme side and pushed into the red. RECOMMENDED!

>> GANSER – Nothing You Do Matters EP 12″ (Felte) *Ltd. Red Gel Picture Disc

The talented Chicago quartet GANSER get one in just before the end of ’22 with this EP. With production from LIARS’ Angus Andrew, GANSER continue to create top-notch rhythmic post-punk. Angus’ production definitely lends a bit of a LIARS vibe to the songs which certainly isn’t a bad thing. RECOMMENDED!

>> KATIE ALICE GREER – Barbarism LP/CD (Four Four)

This first solo record from ex-PRIESTS vocalist KATIE ALICE GREER is a thrilling left turn: Greer trades in the jagged post-punk of Priests for spacious, textured electronics, crooning nostalgic over dystopian noise. Fantastic music here that comes RECOMMENDED!

>> KEKHT ARAKH – Night & Love & Pale Swordsmen LP/CD/CS (Sacred Bones) *Reissues (sold separately) each available on Black or Ltd. Metallic Silver Vinyl

We’re really excited that Sacred Bones has reissued some of the albums by the Ukraine based, one-man black metal project KEKHT ARAKH. The project is led by the mysterious entity Crying Orc (best black metal name ever) & his music is a mix of low-fi early 90s sounding black metal with occasional acoustic pieces, synth passages & even some minimalist piano compositions. It all works really well together & makes for some of the more interesting releases in this style that we’ve heard in awhile. RECOMMENDED!

Reckless Records 11/18/22 New Releases

Weyes Blood – And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow

RECKLESS RECORDS 11/18/22 NEW RELEASES

>> BITCHIN BAJAS – Switched on Ra LP (Drag City) *Now available on vinyl!

ThIs was released digitally in late 2021 & now it’s finally here physically. Chicago astral travelers pay tribute to the ultimate spaceman SUN RA with this tape of covers. Analog synth mastery and surprising vocal treatments from some local faves. RECOMMENDED.

>> RICHARD DAWSON – The Ruby Cord 2LP/CD (Weird World) *Black or Ltd. Sky Blue Vinyl w/ 12″x12″ art print

The Ruby Cord completes a sort of album trilogy for English avant-folkie RICHARD DAWSON, going from past (Peasant) to present (2020) now to 500 years in the future. DAWSON builds a future world with sounds that branch to jazzy prog-folk, sparse electronics and glitches that seem to deconstruct his world’s reality. Like other DAWSON LPs, The Ruby Cord is not for the faint of heart (or ear), but it will reward multiple listens, revealing themes and sonic ideas deep within these compositions. RECOMMENDED.

>> DEZRON DOUGLAS – ATALAYA LP/CD (International Anthem)

Bassist DEZRON DOUGLAS has appeared on a few Int’l Anthem’s titles, notably with harpist BRANDEE YOUNGER on the quarantine-inspired Force Majeure and aboard MAKAYA McCRAVEN’s epic Universal Beings. ATALAYA is DOUGLAS’ first as bandleader, embracing the soul-forward free jazz of later COLTRANE and the rhythmic roots thrust of peak-era MINGUS. One of Int’l Anthem’s more purely “jazz” releases of 2022 (at least in terms of instrumentation), this is far from straight ahead, veering into high celestial territories and soulful sojourns. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

>> PANDA BEAR & SONIC BOOM – Reset LP (Domino) *Black or Ltd. Yellow Vinyl – Now available on vinyl!

After having collaborated on each other’s solo records over the past decade, ANIMAL COLLECTIVE’s PANDA BEAR and the great SONIC BOOM (ex-SPACEMEN 3) share equal billing on this 2022 album. The sound they chase is rooted in 60s pop music, but their approach is uniquely sample-based, crafting sugary melodies, rich honeyed harmonies and propulsive rhythms towards lite psychedelia that seems like THE BEACH BOYS or THE ASSOCIATION thrown into a time machine. Some of either artists’ best work in a few years, this comes RECOMMENDED.

>> SPECIAL INTEREST – Endure LP/CD (Rough Trade)

We’ve had our eyes out over the past few years for art punks SPECIAL INTEREST, who across two LPs and a handful of EPs have cultivated a sound that mixes in disco, house, industrial and funk, creating a virile dance punk concoction that on their third album Endure comes to a thrilling head. Embracing both a militaristic stance to institutional oppression and violence and a warm championing of queer sexuality, these songs hiss, pulsate, rumble and pummel in equal measure. One of the best records of the year. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

>> WEYES BLOOD – And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow LP/CD/CS (Sub Pop) *Black or Ltd. “Loser Edition” Color Vinyl

Natalie Mering’s 5th WEYES BLOOD album is yet another cosmic leap forward in her already excellent body of work. And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow is every bit as epic in scope as Titanic Rising and her songs still swell with echoes of 70’s folk pop & AM Gold like NILSSON, CAROLE KING and THE CARPENTERS, but now it feels like Mering is fully assured in this style and ready to wield it like a superpower. The lush musicality is often in stark contrast to the lyrical content, which deals eloquently with feelings we all know too well from pandemic times – isolation, regret, and yearning to see a little light. The effect is thrillingly subversive & transformative, like a great magic trick. Special guests here include ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER, HAND HABITS’ MEG DUFFY, and MARY LATTIMORE. This is an undeniable Album of the Year contender coming in under the wire. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Reckless Records 11/11/22 New Releases

Smut – How the Light Felt

RECKLESS RECORDS 11/11/12 NEW RELEASES

>> DREAM UNENDING –  Song of Salvation LP/CD (20 Buck Spin) *Black or Ltd. Color Vinyl

Song of Salvation is the second album from DREAM  UNENDING. The duo features the guitarist Derrick Vella of the fantastic death metal band TOMB MOLD & drummer Justin DeTore. This picks up where they left off on the first one with crystalline clean guitar intro & that grows into a 14+ minute progressive death doom masterpiece. Slow plodding doom mixed with elements of shoegaze, progressive rock with occasional synths & piano, melodic solos & guitars drenched in shimmering chorus. Fans of everything from early 90s Swedish stuff like KATATONIA to OPETH to the great 20 Buck Spin roster in general will want to check this out. RECOMMENDED!

>> BILL NACE – Through a Room LP (Drag City)

The Philadelphia based guitarist Bill Nace is back with another one on Drag City. Using guitar loops & instruments like the hurdy gury & taishōgoto, he’s made some haunting & disorienting guitar soundscapes that remind us of noise greats like DEAD C, the FLYING SAUCER ATTACK “instrumentals”, SUN ARAW etc… RECOMMENDED.

>> RIDE – 4 EPs/ Going Blank Again/ Nowhere LPs (Wichita) *Reissues, sold separately – Ltd. Color Vinyl

Crucial early 90s first wave shoegaze EPS & albums by the legendary RIDE are finally available again!! Along with bands like MY BLOODY VALENTINE, SLOWDIVE, LUSH, CATHERINE WHEEL & SWERVEDRIVER, RIDE blended crushing volume, plenty of distortion & other guitar FX with post BEATLES/KINKS/WHO British invasion influences. These recordings have aged incredibly well & their recent reunion has lead to new albums & successful tours around the world. One of our fave all-time bands at Reckless so we’re chuffed to have these in the racks again!! RECOMMENDED.

>> SMUT – How the Light Felt LP/CD/CS (Bayonet)

How the Light Felt is the 2nd album from the Chicago-based alt rockers SMUT. With shimmering guitars, a driving rhythm section & some lyrics inspired by the tragic suicide of singer Tay Roebuck’s sister, SMUT manage to sound uplifting & somber at the same time. Fans of 90s/00s Brit pop & indie rock like LUSH, THE LAS, VELOCITY GIRL, MAZZY STAR & even THE CRANBERRIES at times, early CAPTURED TRACKS releases etc…will love this. The band also features Reckless employee Andrew Min on guitar. Yeah Andrew! RECOMMENDED.

>> VARIOUS – Life Moves Pretty Fast: The John Hughes Mixtapes LP (Demon) *2LP Black Vinyl or 6LP Red Vinyl

The films of John Hughes are special to people around the world but they are particularly special to Chicago. Many of his now classic films were set or filmed here & the city was always one of the characters as much as Ferris Bueller or Kevin McCallister in Home Alone. Almost as important as the characters in Hughes’ films was the music. Films like Pretty in Pink & The Breakfast Club prominently featured new sounds of upcoming alternative artists like SIMPLE MINDS, OMD, ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN & PSYCHEDELIC FURS & awarded those artists with massive hits. Music was very important to Hughes’ during the filmmaking process & there were also of great songs in the films that didn’t make the proper soundtracks that are now included in these great sets. We’re really proud to be able to carry these essential compilations at Reckless. RECOMMENDED.

Reckless Records 11/4/22 New Releases

Botch – We Are The Romans (Remastered)

RECKLESS RECORDS 11/4/22 NEW RELEASES

>> BOTCH – We Are The Romans 2LP (Sargent House) *Remastered w/ bonus track – Ltd. Blue Vinyl

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!! Reissued once again, this masterpiece of post-hardcore slash metal is back in print! This was BOTCH’s second & final full-length and really raised the bar at the tail end of the 90s along with CAVE IN’s Until Your Heart Stops & DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN’s Calculating Infinity, all of which are on the same label (Hydra Head Records) & came out in 1999. What a year! Anyway, this BOTCH LP is all of the best parts of hardcore & math rock rolled up into one angry ball & still sounds as fresh as it did upon its release. A total, unquestionable, stone classic. RECOMMENDED!

>> EZRA COLLECTIVE – Where I’m Meant To Be 2LP/CD/CS (Partisan) *Black or Ltd. Orange Marble Vinyl Deluxe Edition w/ book – also includes signed print while supplies last!

This second full-length from London’s EZRA COLLECTIVE fits perfectly into the city’s flourishing jazz hybrid sound that blends in hip-hop and Afrobeat a la artists like KOKOROKO and NUBYA GARCIA. Featuring support from SAMPA THE GREAT and the director STEVE McQUEEN, among others. RECOMMENDED!

>> LES RALLIZES DÉNUDÉS – The Oz Tapes 2LP (Temporal Drift) *Ltd. Transparent Blue Vinyl

Oz was a Tokyo upstairs DIY art space that existed for only about a year in 1972/73. The now legendary band from Kyoto LES RALLIZES DÉNUDÉS was one of the house bands at the space & this is the first ever release of recordings that were made there. The tapes were recently discovered after having thought to be lost for almost 50 years. The previously released recordings all vary in sound quality & mostly exist in the lo-fi realm but these recordings sound pretty crisp all things considered. This is actually the first ever officially sanctioned release by the band & family members & there are more releases coming soon. A must have for fans & a great entry point for newcomers & fans of heavy psych ala HIGH RISE, FLOWER TRAVELLIN’ BAND, WHITE OUT etc… RECOMMENDED!

>> MOUNT KIMBIE – MK 3.5: Die Cuts/ City Planning 2LP/2CD (Warp) *Black or Ltd. Clear Vinyl

The latest project from UK duo MOUNT KIMBIE is really two projects, showcasing both sides of the group’s sound. Dom Maker’s Die Cuts is brighter and melody-driven, where as the Kai Campos-made City Planning is more textured and physical. An ambitious project from this duo that rewards deep listens. RECOMMENDED!

>> NINA NASTASIA – Riderless Horse LP (Temporary Residence) *Ltd. Color Vinyl – Now available on LP!

The great Nina Nastasia returns after a 12 year hiatus & we’re so happy she’s back. This is her first proper solo album & it deals with her grieving the suicide of her former partner, mental health issues & the ups & downs that we all have to deal with as adults sooner or later. Despite the heavy themes, the songs do have uplifting moments & a positive outlook or at least a resolve about the future. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

>> SPOON & ADRIAN SHERWOOD – Lucifer on the Moon: Spoon vs. On-U Sound LP (Matador)

Lucifer on the Moon is a companion album to SPOON’s 2022 LP Lucifer on the Sofa, a complete album rework courtesy of UK dub legend ADRIAN SHERWOOD. Joined with additional session work from On-U in-house players, Sherwood’s studio magic transforms Lucifer on the Sofa into a lush, extraterrestrial soundscape. RECOMMENDED!

Reckless Records 10/28/22 New Releases

Darkthrone – Astral Fortress

RECKLESS RECORDS 10/28/22  NEW RELEASES

DARKTHRONE – Astral Fortress LP/CD (Peaceville) *Ltd. Yellow Vinyl

Here it is – the 20th album from the mighty DARKTHRONE. Astral Fortress follows the trend that began on 2016’s Arctic Thunder and continued through last year’s awesome Eternal Hails of traditional heavy metal, hard rock, and prog being incorporated into the band’s classic black metal sound. Despite the tongue-in-cheek cover art, this LP is much more warm and organic then you might expect from these legends if you’re only familiar with their early 90’s benchmarks. Nocturno Culto’s voice can’t reach the howling heights it once did on the classics from that era, but his ferocious bark – something like 60% LEMMY and 40% TOM WAITS – perfectly suits the swaggering doom ‘n’ blues he’s concocted here with longtime partner-in-crime Fenriz. It’s really just thrilling to hear these two geniuses follow their muse without any fear, even if it alienates the “true” metal heads. We swear when the 10-minute epic “The Sea Beneath The Sea” splits open and changes tempo halfway through, you might think you’re listening to STYX for a second. Don’t let that scare you away – this record is an instant classic. RECOMMENDED!

DRUGDEALER – Hiding in Plain Sight LP/CD (Mexican Summer) *Black or Ltd. Indie Exclusive Red Wine Vinyl

Third record from Michael Collins and DRUGDEALER works in the space of 70s LA, Laurel Canyon ease with a nice layer of pseudo cocaine sleaze. There’s some AOR funk a la BOZ SCAGGS, some acoustic soul in the LOGGINS & MESSINA vein, and some bright sunshine harmonies that can sound like early AMERICA. Featuring help from Tim Presley (WHITE FENCE), KATE BOLLINGER, and production work from MAC DeMARCO among others, this album comes RECOMMENDED.

GUIDED BY VOICES – Scalping the Guru LP/CD/CS (GBV Inc)

This compilation focuses on a really exciting era of GUIDED BY VOICES when they burst into the indie mainstream with great albums like Vampire on Titus & Bee Thousand & these tracks that were released on a handful of EPs. Those 7″s are long out of print & now they’ve been organized by Robert Pollard like a proper album. Some of these songs were (and still are) staples in their live show & it’s great to be able to have this stuff all in one place. RECOMMENDED.

HAMMERED HULLS – Careening LP (Dischord)

HAMMERED HULLS is a group from D.C. that features Alec Mackaye (IGNITION, THE FAITH, THE WARMERS), Mark Cisneros (CHAIN & THE GANG, THE MAKE UP), Mary Timony (HELIUM, AUTOCLAVE, WILD FLAG) & drummer Chris Wilson. Those of you hoping for sounds of 80s & 90s Dischord won’t be disappointed as there are nods at Alec’s other bands, FUGAZI & other Dischord greats. This is a really pleasant surprise! RECOMMENDED.

PALM – Nicks & Grazes LP/CD (Saddle Creek) *Black or Ltd. Indie Exclusive Orange Vinyl

The first album from Philly’s PALM since 2018’s Rock Island rewards the wait, building off their knotty, math-y compositions and shimmering pop sensibilities with more of a post-punk rumble, often sounding like early THIS HEAT in their discordant sonic palette. The songs on Nicks & Grazes aren’t tied together so much by a narrative theme as they are by purely sonic themes, blending in collage-like sounds with electro- punk instrumentation. Fans of the aforementioned THIS HEAT or peak ANIMAL COLLECTIVE will find lots to love here. RECOMMENDED!

THEO PARRISH – DJ-Kicks: Detroit Forward 3LP (!K7)

The 78th entry in the great DJ-Kicks series enlists the talents of the legendary THEO PARRISH. Focused on Detroit artists past and present, Detroit Forward captures the essence of the city’s music that follows a thread from jazz to Motown soul to downtempo house and techno. Like any good THEO joint, this stuff is lush, airy and absolutely beautiful. An essential mix that comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

2ND GRADE – Easy Listening LP (Double Double Whammy) *Ltd. Blue Vinyl

Peter Gill’s 2ND GRADE project returns with this stunning collection of power pop jams: 16 tracks total and each catchier than the one before it. It can be easy for this type of music to veer quickly into pastiche or broad camp, but like Adam Schlesinger before him Gill clearly has a deep love for the genre and wants to do right by it by writing the most winsome hooks, riffs, and songs he can. Multiple listens reveal seriously sophisticated chord changes and unreal harmonies. There’s a legit Song of the Year contender here too: a short solo jazz guitar ballad called “Kramer In LA.” Seinfeld fans can probably guess what that one’s about based on the title, but if you listen to it without too many spoilers from us we promise it will wreck you. This is HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

SUNBURNED HAND OF THE MAN – Headdress LP (Three Lobed) *20th Anniversary – Ltd. Purple Vinyl

In a barren field or a dense dark wood the presence of SUNBURNED HAND OF THE MAN can be felt. The same dark tribal elements that wrap themselves so tightly around early AMON DÜÜL. The humming of organs and the fragile bleats of whistles clamor around broken mutterings & chants in lost tongues. This calm then erupts into a steady groove akin to Alain Goraguer’s score for Fantastic Planet (La Planete Sauvage). They act as the more dynamic and altogether psych companion to the NO-NECK BLUES BAND. This record is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

WORM – Bluenothing LP/CD (20 Buck Spin) *Black or Ltd. Blue Vinyl

The great Florida band WORM released Foreverglade earlier in the year & this EP is the follow up. They continue to mix death & doom in interesting ways & this one has some fascinating lead guitar playing & some symphonic moments. Great stuff. RECOMMENDED.

VARIOUS – Bound For Hell: On The Sunset Strip 2LP/CD (Numero Group) *Black or Ltd. White Vinyl w/ 144 pg book!

21 Acts, 21 Tracks, & the sound of California Rock & Roll in the 80s. Call it Metal, call it glam, call it whatever you want. This raucous, rough & ready heavy guitar music is just as catchy & nasty as it was back then, with an emphasis on attitude & an ear for hooks. This stuff took over the radios & the clubs & defined the rock & roll scene for a decade. From Numero, so you know it’s well curated and RECOMMENDED!

Reckless Records 10/21/22 New Releases

Arctic Monkeys – The Car

RECKLESS RECORDS 10/21/22  NEW RELEASES

ARCHERS OF LOAF – Reason In Decline LP/CD (Merge) *Black or Ltd. Red/Purple Swirl “Peak Vinyl” Edition

It’s been nearly a quarter century since we last got a studio full length from indie titans ARCHERS OF LOAF, so it might be a bit of an understatement to say that we’re happy to have them back. New material that’s informed by both the band’s old songwriting and their maturing outlook. RECOMMENDED.

ARCTIC MONKEYS – The Car LP/CD/CS (Domino) *Black or Ltd. “Custard” Vinyl w/ tote bags & posters while supplies last!

The seventh album from these Sheffield boys is their first in a half decade, and the band picks up right where they left off, following the threads of sultry, soulful lounge singing they developed on both AM and Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. Glamorous, velvet, string-laden and yet unsettled, this is perhaps the MONKEYS’ most enigmatic and gripping LP to date. RECOMMENDED.

JON BRION – Meaningless LP (Jealous Butcher) *Remastered – Ltd. Blue Vinyl

FINALLY, this long lost cult classic power pop album by JON BRION is back in print, newly remastered and available on vinyl for the first time ever. If you’re a fan of Jon’s iconic movie scores (Eternal Sunshine, Lady Bird, Magnolia…the list goes on and on) or his impeccable production work (most famously with FIONA APPLE, KANYE WEST, MAC MILLER… again, ON AND ON AND ON) and you’ve either never heard Meaningless or only caught it bootlegged on YouTube, then this is ESSENTIAL listening. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE.

DRY CLEANING – Stumpwork LP/CD/CS (4AD) *Ltd. White Vinyl

Sophomore record from the London art-rock quartet DRY CLEANING, who immediately placed themselves at the front of the UK’s growing legion of poet-post-punks on their debut New Long Leg. The feel on Stumpwork is no different, contrasting the nervous cacophony of the band with lead singer Florence Shaw’s dry, dissociated vocal style. Taken in total, Stumpwork mirrors the alienation of late capitalism and the crumbling of failed urban life piling on top of each other. And yet the band finds harmony in the tight, cohesive playing, happy to push and pull between a deft rhythmic touch & a pummeling moment of noise. RECOMMENDED.

DUMA – Duma LP (Nyege Nyege Tapes)

DUMA is a duo that came from Nairobi’s metal underground. There was a lot of buzz about this release online back in 2020 & it’s finally available on vinyl. Somewhat terrifying sounding electronic/industrial noise with blown-out & fast “beats” with growling singing that sounds like it’s taken from a death metal album. Totally wild and RECOMMENDED!

JAMES MARLON MAGAS – Confusion is My Name LP (Midwich)

James Marlon Magas has made a lot of music under different names (LAKE OF DRACULA, COUCH, MAGAS etc…) but this is the first time he’s made anything under his full name & he’s gone ALL IN for this one. With help from a unique group of collaborators including Asia Argento, Miss Pussycat, Electronicat & Fred Lonberg-Holm, Magas has created his electronic, art-rock masterpiece & there’s even a little rap tune (!!) & some great artwork by Robert Beatty. Anyone
that’s been following Jim on his remarkable journey will recognize that it’s all be building to this. RECOMMENDED!!

NNAMDÏ- Please Have a Seat LP/CD/CS (Secretly Canadian) *Black or Ltd. Walnut Brown Vinyl

The Chicago multi-instrumentalist Nnamdi Ogbonnaya returns with his 2nd solo album. Nnamdi is a busy human, along with making his own records, he plays bass in LALA LALA, drums in the math rock group MONOBODY & also helps run Sooper Records. Please Have a Seat is another genre smashing album of art-pop/hip-hop with an overall really fun vibe throughout. Truly forward-thinking & unique stuff here. RECOMMENDED!

LOU REED – Words & Music 1965 LP/CD/CS (Light In The Attic) *Black or Ltd. Bright Yellow Vinyl – 2LP Deluxe Edition includes bonus 7″

1965 demos recorded by Lou Reed & John Cale that were kept sealed in an envelope that Reed mailed to himself as a “poor man’s copyright” & released for the very first time in 2022. The very first versions of “I’m Waiting For the Man”, “Heroin” & “Pale Blue Eyes” are included along with a number of previously unreleased recordings. Just typing that out almost seems unbelievable. The recording quality is surprisingly decent & it feels truly special to be able to hear these fly-on-the-wall style recordings of music that would become legendary. RECOMMENDED!

DAWN RICHARD & SPENCER ZAHN – Pigments LP (Merge) *Ltd. Blue “Peak Vinyl” Edition

Really cool collaboration between LA’s DAWN RICHARD and electronic producer SPENCER ZAHN, making textured ambient soul music with a mixture of synthesized and analog tones. The result lands somewhere between LOW, L’RAIN and the Int’l Anthem records by CARLOS NINO. Do not sleep on this one. RECOMMENDED!

TAYLOR SWIFT – Midnights LP/CD (Republic) *4 VARIANTS ON LP & CD: Ltd. “Blood Moon” Edition, Ltd. “Jade Green” Edition, Ltd. “Mahogany” Edition, and Ltd. “Moonstone Blue” Edition — Moonstone LP w/ Taylor Swift signed photo also available while supplies last!

Upon its announcement, the T.Swift faithful speculated that Midnights might be Taylor’s long-rumored “rock” album – and we have to admit, she almost had us fooled with this “Jade Tree circa 1997” looking cover art. Now it’s here and we think that the consistently gauzy and often disarmingly minimalist synth-pop vibe will make this really solid record slot in nicely on the shelf next to your SYLVAN ESSO and CHVRCHES LPs. In its darker moments it even sounds like a mainstream pop take on JOHNNY JEWEL’s classic Italians Do It Better sound. What more can we say? It’s good!
