Colman Cooney
Top 5 in order:
1) The Men – Open Your Heart
It’s like a kick in the dick in the best way possible.

2) Goat – World Music
This Swedish “alternative fusion music group” (wikipedia) comes out of absolutely nowhere to give the perfect fuzzy, tribal psyche soundtrack for summoning your familiars to sacrifice your neighbor’s butterball first-born.

3) George Harrison – Early Takes Vol. 1
I like All Things Must Pass, but I could never really love it- I always thought it tried to do too much. So here, with 10 tracks, 35 minutes, and simple (if any) arrangements, George’s songwriting gets a bare-bones display, and is all the more moving for it.

4) Bobby Womack – Bravest Man in the Universe
The soul staple pours his dying guts out to a club beat. I don’t know what Lana del Rey is doing here (besides emaciated moaning), but Gil gives a posthumous appearance immediately after to balance it out a little.

5) Donnie & Joe Emerson – Dreamin’ Wild
The kind of dudes you’d expect to see performing at a bowling alley on a Monday night in 1982, playing outdated AM funk, singing unintelligible lyrics to a sad discoball backdrop and a bad teenage makeout session. And they’re totally sincere and it’s the most endearing thing I’ve maybe ever heard.

And the rest:
Peaking Lights – Lucifer
Spiritualized – Sweet Heart Sweet Light
Nenah Cherry & the Thing – The Cherry Thing
Dr. John – Locked Down
Liars – WIXIW
Wild Nothing – Nocturne
Dinosaur Jr. – I Bet on Sky
AC Newman – Shut Down the Streets

Steve Rahman
Top 5 Hip Hop Releases, in no particular order
Oddisee – “People Hear What They See”
Long awaited, but so worth it. If you’re like O has one of the best
flow/ voice/ lyrics combos in the game, & this is a great example of
that.

Aesop Rock – “Skelethon”
Never really liked this sort of left field Hip Hop, but what stands out
to me here is through the density of the lyrics and the dark feeling of
paranoia that’s just all over this record, the soundscape has a groove
to it.

Kendrick Lamar – “Good Kid, m.A.A.d City”
This is one of those records that straddles the line between mainstream
largesse, & underground artistry with great results. A more complete
record, in terms of what’s become the template for Hip Hop I didn’t hear
all year. Kendrick really makes good on the hype.

Nas – “Life is Good”
This record is Nas doing what Nas does best. Over some of the best
production he’s had since “Illmatic.” While it’s not the “Hear, My Dear”

Apollo Brown & O.C. / Guilty Simpson – “Trophies / Dice Game”
I know it’s supposed to be my top 5, but these two really stand together
to make the point that Apollo Brown makes dope beats, and that’s really
saying something with two world class MCs really going hard on these
records.

Top 5 Everything Else

Metric – “Synthetica”
Esperanza Spaulding – “Radio Music Society”
Robert Glasper Experiment – “Black Radio”
