MATADOR
First album in 20 years from this cult-favorite of a group. Since hype built around Matador's reissue of "Underwater Moonlight," as well as an outstanding world tour, the group felt fit to take the magic back into the studio. The result? Something you wouldn't expect from a band that's been away for 20 years. Yes, it's great--ROBYN HITCHCOCK's acid damaged tomfoolery blends in great with gorgeous melodies and numbers from REW, SELIGMAN & WINDSOR.

MATADOR
Seeming like an absurd anachronism back when it was released in 1980, this little slice of low-rent 60s pop-psych should have -- according to conventional wisdom -- disappeared without a trace in the age of history-rewriting punk/new wave. Now, of course, it sounds like a perfectly logical precursor to the coming Brit-pop fascination, brewing together elements of the STONES, BEATLES, BYRDS, early FLOYD, SOFT MACHINE & BEEFHEART into a stew served with enough grit that you know the boys are in it for real. And then, of course, there's ROBYN HITCHCOCK, the head kook, whose lyrics & delivery are a singular curiousity -- SYD BARRETT as sung by IGGY POP after voice lessons from BRYAN FERRY. So here it is. Their masterpiece. In such a complete form that it makes the world seem somehow smaller in comparison. 2 cds, no fewer than a dozen outtakes, lots of session time, a few appropriate cover tunes, one long essay/history of the band. Take some time off.
